A Challenge to all candidate supporters, Show Me the COURAGE! |
|
As many of your know, I have been "bashing" on many of the current candidates for what I feel is a good reason. However, in the interest of fairness, I want to see if there are things I am not considering, so I want to post this question to anyone who currently strongly supports one of the named candidates.
Can you show your candidate performing an act of political courage?
Before you hit reply, let me explain what I mean and give an example or two.
Political courage is standing up for what you believe is RIGHT over what is popular or easy. Political courage is acting, even though you know your actions may have negative personal consequences.
2 Examples.
#1) Howard Dean signs a civil union bill at 35% in the polls with 6 months to go before a re-election.
#2) Al Gore, despite a popular president and a mistaken public belief that Iraq was a threat, speaks out publicly against the IWR and puts his credibility on the line for something he didn't have to.
Some basic ground rules. An Act of POLITICAL COURAGE cannot be attached to personal gain. A lawyer taking a case against a corporation is not an act of political courage, it is a function of a job. A politician giving back $850,000 in campaign funds b/c the bundler is a criminal, is not an act of political courage. Changing your opinion on a topic AFTER polls have shifted is NOT an act of political courage.
Show me a point in these other candidate's pasts where they acted against their own self interest for the benefit of a greater good.

2. Hillary's fight for universal health care during Bills administration |
|
She put herself out on the line, and was greatly damaged for doing so.

10. If she was so right, then, then why the "defense of health insurance |
|
profits" plan today?
Having courage, in the past when there were no political repurcussions because she was not an elected official, turning to pandering for the insurance industry donations today is NOT political courage.

11. The only problem is... |
|
I don't see offering a plan in and of itself as an act of Political Courage.
HOWEVER, had she stuck to her guns today and offered a similar plan and used the last 15 years of poor health care in America as proof of her initial plan was correct THAT would be political courage.

For just about EVERYTHING he does.
His push for universal healthcare, instead of pandering for health insurance donations.
His bill to impeach Cheney.

Polls show the public overwhelmingly favor universal healthcare and impeachment of Cheney. The OP says: "Changing your opinion on a topic AFTER polls have shifted is NOT an act of political courage."
Put on them reading glasses.

9. Kucinich leading the House effort agaoinst the IWR |
|
At a time when it was unfashionable to be against the rush to war in Iraq, DK led the drive to corral Democrats in the House to oppose it. He also spoke out and said things that were unpopular at the time, even though they later turned out to be absolutely correct.
