AP Analysis: Dodges Undercut Clinton Image
Analysis: Dodges Undercut Clinton Image

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign slogan is "Ready for Change, Ready to Lead" yet she has adopted the time-honored, front-runner strategy of dodging tough questions, contradicting the image of a strong leader.
The former first lady and New York senator refused to take a position on a range of substantive issues during Wednesday night's debate, from Social Security reform to U.S. troop deployments in Iraq to whether Israel, if threatened, has the right to attack Iran.

She even ducked the question of which team she'd root for if her hometown Chicago Cubs met the New York Yankees in next month's World Series. "Well, I would probably have to alternate sides," she said.

Clinton's substantive knowledge of issues and strong debate performances throughout the primary campaign are among the reasons she's leading her rivals in national and most state polls. But last night's outing found her refusing to answer questions she deems "hypothetical," or saying she'll wait until she's president to outline specific policy proposals....

Clinton's refusal to commit to some policy specifics is both tactical and principled, her advisers insist. They said that while she is reluctant to give Republicans ammunition to use in a general election, she also resists committing to specifics on many matters that could later impede her ability to do her job as president....

1. Ya know, I don't discount her many advantages, but I agree with the article --
I just don't think this woman is ultimately going to be the first choice of primary-voting Democrats.

She has many attributes as a public figure and plenty of current support. I don't discount that.

But she's not a good speaker.

I think this will do her in.

2. Hillary is a political weather vane.
Most politicians are to some degree but Hillary probably wont go to the ladies room unless a poll says she should.

4. I love this -
all the other candidate's supporters grousing about the fact she is basically ignoring them and running a smart campaign. Tut tut.

8. I don't call it a smart campaign
To claim to be a strong leader than refuse to answer tough, realistic questions. That looks like a politician, not a leader.

5. I guess it's none of our business what she'll do as president
A candidate shouldn't answer any hypothetical questions, you see. That would be naive.

7. Isn't that what Supreme Court nominees say to the
Judiciary Committee? Can't answer those questions as it might affect future ruling, or something like that....

It was interesting that Edwards said he had learned from his mistake voting for the IWR and was not going to make that mistake again and voted against the non-binding resolution to condemn Iran and the terrorist they are sponsoring. That was reassuring.

9. Although I am an Edwards supporter, I have to correct any
misunderstanding that may exist about the fact that Edwards did not vote one way or the other on the Iran resolution. He is no serving in the Senate at this time. Sorry if I misunderstood your answer.

to vote for anything that bush could use to get us into another conflict. Thanks for correcting me.

11. Ready for Change, Ready to Lead" is an empty slogan--an attempt to co-opt Obama' message of change
Hillary loves those banners-just like George W. Bush. He never speaks anywhere without one--except at the U.N.--where they're not allowed.
