My decision to vote for Dennis in my primary didn't last long
I was going to vote for him because I'm not excited about any of the candidates; a combination of protest vote and an endorsement of such ideas as single payer healthcare, but his voting against SCHIP, his endorsement of a regressive gas tax and what I see as his posturing about impeachment, leave me cold.

Dennis knows that his introducing impeachment as privilged business on the House floor will go..... exactly nowhere. It won't even shine a spotlight on the issue. All it will do is excite his supporters and perhaps stimulate donations to his campaign. To me, that's the very definition of posturing.

3. what
what is a regressive gas tax? Will that make the tax on gasoline go up or down? Keep in mind that we pay 2 to 3 times the tax on gasoline in Europe that you pay in the USA.

Was Kucinich for lowering the tax on gasoline? (Not the best policy for the environment)

5. DK didn't say in the debate that he wanted to eliminate the gas tax
But he said he was against a $3/gallon tax rise. For some reason, some people on here seem to be misrepresenting what he said.

6. It's my understanding that he suggested raising
the gas tax to $3 a gallon. And Europe is different. There's real public transportation in Europe. I live in a very rural area and most people commute 45 minutes or more each way. Such a tax would be devastating for many, many of my friends and neighbors.

8. that is wrong, I think
He was asked, directly, if he would support a $3 rise in gas tax and he said no. That would be terribly regressive in an economy such as ours. For some reason, some people are spreading tales that he said the exact opposite of what he said.

11. cool!
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what I heard. I can't find a transcript, though, curiously.

12. I too
Live in a rural area, most people I know commute an hour to go work along the coast. Yes there is public trasportation, but here the car is easiest (we are not Paris, Marseille, or Lyon where public transit makes it so that a car is more of a hassle than a convienence). I pay 7.40 us dollars for a gallon of gasoline (5.20 euros) or 1.30 euros per liter) of that 7.40 us dollars per gallon roughly 5.90 dollars per gallon is tax. 3.00 us dollars per gallon would still only be half of what we pay here in France. I have a gasoline burning car today, the wife has a diesel, diesel is less taxed than gasoline (diesel releases less CO2 per kilometer than gasoline for numerous reasons). our diesel is 6.20 dollars us per gallon of which roughly 4.50 dollars per gallon is tax. To compensate on price I have a diesel Peugeot 206 that gets 60 mpg city and 65 mpg highway. My old gasoline car (soon to be replaced by a 50 mpg city 60 mpg highway diesel) gets 35 mpg city 40 mpg highway. You and your friends may be hurt by high gas taxes at first, but when you buy your next new cars you would likely get something that burns as little fuel as possible. This would be great for the environment.

Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 06:38 AM by Mass
Cannot find the rollcall that had the bill passing the Senate with 57-29. I just found a bill passing the Senate 94-1, Feingold voting NO.

4. As I said, I don't have a candidate and I know
that Dennis said that he wasn't voting for SCHIP because it doesn't cover legal immigrant children, and I agree that it should, but an old phrase comes to mind: The perfect is the enemy of the good. I'm not happy with any of the candidates.
