Democrats Try to Distract Anti-war Voters
By Craig Crawford | 10:38 AM; Sep. 28, 2007

While their party’s presidential contenders, during a debate this week, dodged making promises to withdraw all troops from Iraq, Democrats running Congress tried to change the subject from the war.

The week’s events gave anti-war voters plenty of reason to wonder whether Democrats are just stringing them along. Democratic congressional leaders launched a legislative campaign on domestic issues that might serve to distract the party’s political base from the failure of Congress to limit or stop the war.

To that end, yesterday Senate Democrats diverted attention from the war-funding details of a military spending bill by passing an unrelated amendment certain to delight liberals — creating federal penalties for an array of hate crimes. Children’s health insurance, student loans and many other Democratic initiatives on Capitol Hill are aimed at pleasing party loyalists and drawing President George W. Bush into a veto showdown that makes Republicans look bad.

But on the war, Democrats seem to be saying, “If you can’t beat them, change the subject.”

1. It is a sad day when both political parties do not cater to the will of the people
The 2006 election was about Iraq, and getting out, and both parties are ignoring the message

In 5 years, no matter who wins in 2008, how will they justify the additional deaths and killing that will occur because of their folly
