“We have a chance to be more American than we have ever been.”
Alfre Woodard is an extraordinary woman. That is the first thing that hits you when she starts talking about why she is a Woman for Obama. She is thoughtful, eloquent, passionate, idealistic, realistic, sensitive and Hell-bent on seeing this man elected president.
Alfre spent an afternoon in Chicago yesterday getting women fired up for the Obama campaign. She spent some time planning outreach opportunities with campaign staff, encouraging the team to work their hearts out for “someone who respects, honors and understands us”.
It is just plain comfortable to be in Alfre’s presence. At first you might think she feels so familiar because you have seen her in movies and television, from St. Elsewhere to Grand Canyon to Beauty Shop to Desperate Housewives. Later you realize it’s because, like our sisters and closest girlfriends, she is interested in honest conversation, and anything that gets in its way seems to fall by the wayside.
Alfre describes herself as a child of the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements, a beneficiary of the change they wrought; as she puts it, “I got to walk through the doors they opened.”
She grew up in a strong, vibrant African American community in Tulsa, OK. Her parents were from a rural part of the country and were rooted in the lessons of subsistence farming: “the land is a great equalizer”. While their pragmatism instilled a sense of practicality in her, it didn’t dim her idealistic view of America and our founding. She says of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and Bill of Rights, “I believed all the stuff you were taught…that great men wrote these inspired documents and we have been trying to live up to them ever since.”
Alfre describes herself as a Yellow Dog Democrat who is “tired of the yellow dog. Now we have a visionary, a real leader.” She touts Barack’s experience as a grassroots organizer and his ability to see people, to “get” them.
“I’m doing this because it is possible,” Alfre says. And because she knows we each have an obligation to do what it takes to realize that possibility. “He stands up and speaks the truth; that’s all he can do. It is up to us to stand with him.”Referring back to the “inspired documents” that laid the foundation of our nation she says, “We can jump further into what those documents are about with this candidate. We can manifest the promise of this country. We have a chance to be more American than we have ever been.”
