Edwards Aide Seeks to Reassure BackersBy NEDRA PICKLER – 3 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — The manager of John Edwards'
presidential bid sought to reassure supporters Friday
that the decision to use taxpayer dollars to fund the
campaign does not leave him at a disadvantage in the
race.
Edwards announced Thursday that although he originally
said he would skip the public financing system to raise
more money on his own, he had changed his mind. The
decision means the 2004 vice presidential nominee will
get millions of dollars from the public fund, but he'll
have to adhere to state-by-state and national spending
limits.
The surprise announcement came three days before the
third-quarter filing deadline in which Edwards is once
again expected to be far outpaced by rivals Hillary
Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
Edwards campaign manager David Bonior rejected the
opinion of political experts who said the decision will
handicap the campaign.
