Clinton reaches Big Names with Deep Pockets
I read a post this morning which stated (former President) "Bill Clinton was frantically calling for supporters to donate to Senator Clinton's campaign." I wonder where he finds the time.......

The third annual "Clinton Global Initiative

Billions Committed for Environment at Clinton Global Initiative

NEW YORK, New York, September 26, 2007 (ENS) - Today in New York, the opening day of the third annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, CGI, brought together some 1,000 leaders of business, government and nongovernmental organizations from over 70 countries, including 52 current and former heads of state, who made commitments focusing on the Initiative's four focus areas: education, energy and climate change, global health and poverty alleviation.

>
Clinton also highlighted the commitment of Florida Power and Light to build new solar electricity plants in Florida, to provide customers with information on reducing their carbon imprint, and to giv them a way to do it. The commitment is worth $2.4 billion for 2012. The company will build 500 megawatts of new solar energy generating capacity, with an expected reduction in CO2 emissions of more than two million tons over five years.

Clinton invited Al Gore, his former vice president, to speak about climate change, and Gore said the world is already at a crisis point.

"There should be no mistake that this crisis, the climate crisis, is not going to be solved only by personal action and business action. We need changes in laws, we need changes in policies, we need leadership, and we need a new treaty, we need a mandate at Bali, during the first 14 days of December this year, to complete a treaty, not by 2012, but by 2009, and put it completely into force by 2010. We can do it and we must do it," Gore said.

Actor Brad Pitt is expanding his commitment to New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward with his Make it Right project to create a community of 150 affordable and sustainable homes in one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. Pitt and his partner Steve Bing are challenging members of the Clinton Global Initiative to join them in rebuilding the Lower Ninth Ward by each pledging to match $5 million in contributions to the Make it Right project, for a total of $10 million.

"The heart and soul of New Orleans, specifically the people of the Lower 9th Ward, are paramount to this project," said Pitt. "The words of one elderly man who is determined to return to New Orleans led to the name of our organization: he asked us, directly simply and profoundly, to help make it right. So that's what we're doing. We're going to help to make it right with 150 sustainable, affordable houses - houses that stand out for their design both aesthetically and structurally, so that these people can live in beautiful safe structures that respect their spirit and provide a good quality of life."

Southern California Edison Among Utilities to Work With the Clinton Global Initiative to Address Climate Change
Eight Utilities to Increase Energy Efficiency Investment $500 Million Annually

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Southern California Edison (SCE), which leads the nation in energy efficiency, joined seven other utilities and former President Bill Clinton today in announcing their commitment to investing in energy efficiency and seeking regulatory actions to increase that investment by $500 million annually from 2010 to 2016.

The commitment, which was announced today at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York, would raise the companies’ total investments in energy efficiency by $500 million annually to about $1.5 billion annually and would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 30 million tons by 2016, the equivalent to removing 6 million cars from the road. It also will avoid the need for 50, 500-megawatt peaking power plants.

The eight utilities, which represent nearly 20 million customers in 22 states, also committed to the creation of a national institute for electric efficiency to develop regulatory models and convene supporting conferences in the power sector. This institute would be formed within the Edison Electric Institute, which represents the nation’s investor-owned electric utilities. The new institute is open to interested parties — both domestic and international — who share its commitment to energy efficiency.

California has been a leader in energy efficiency since the early 1980s. Just last week, the California Public Utilities Commission adopted a policy to further strengthen the state’s leadership promoting customer energy efficiency programs. The new program provides incentives to ensure that utility investors and managers view energy efficiency as a core part of the utility’s regulated operations that can generate meaningful earnings for its shareholders. At the same time the new framework protects consumers’ financial investment; ensures that program savings are real and verified; and imposes penalties for substandard performance.

>

During the past five years, SCE’s energy efficiency programs have led the nation and saved more than 4 billion kilowatt-hours, enough energy to power 500,000 homes for an entire year. The programs have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2 million tons, the equivalent of removing 400,000 cars from the road. During the next two years, SCE will help customers save an additional 2 billion kilowatt-hours, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by another 1 million tons.

SCE has been recognized six times by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the ENERGY STAR Award for the effectiveness of its energy efficiency programs. The utility also was honored on Sept. 19 by the EPA with an award for its appliance recycling energy efficiency program, the only utility in an international field of honorees celebrating the best environmental protection programs during the last 20 years.

Clinton generates 245 pledges to act on world woes
Fri 28 Sep 2007

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Bill Clinton wrapped up his annual philanthropic summit on Friday after generating 245 pledges to combat health, poverty, education and climate woes that he said could potentially help 100 million people.

Presidents, chief executives and aid workers mingled with celebrities including actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and singer Shakira, during the three-day Clinton Global Initiative which the former U.S. president says rates action over talk.

"This has become what I hoped it would be -- an action- forcing event with a lot of ideas, not just responding to problems but coming up with ideas about how to change the playing field for the future," Clinton said.

>

Since its launch in 2005, the Clinton Global Initiative has seen $10 billion in action pledges. But the rules of attendance, which costs $15,000, are tough: Members must make a pledge and they must keep it if they want to be invited back.

Summit organizers did not place a total dollar value on the pledges made in 2007.

Sept 27 (Reuters) - Presidents rubbed shoulders with Hollywood stars and company chiefs mingled with aid workers as billions of dollars of pledges to tackle global woes were generated at Bill Clinton's annual philanthropic summit.

Some of the commitments of action made during the third annual brainstorming session on health, poverty, education and climate problems on Thursday are:

* In a $25 million, three-year partnership, Teach for America, Teach First, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Amy & Larry Robbins Foundation will establish an independent teachers' corps. Initially, programs will be set up in Estonia, Germany, India, Israel, South Africa and two others countries to tackle educational disparities.

* Intel Corp (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is committing $300 million over the next 5 years to expand Intel Teach, an online training program. The program has already trained over 4 million teachers in 40 countries to effectively integrate technology into their classrooms, and the expansion will reach an additional 1.5 million teachers in 15 countries.

>

Over the next five years, Standard Chartered Bank will commit to underwrite $4 billion to $5 billion in debt to renewable energy projects with a total project value of $8 billion to $10 billion.

They will target clean energy projects in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and focus their efforts in areas such as wind, hydro, geothermal, solar, biomass and coal bed methane. They may play the role of lead arranger of debt, financial adviser or equity investor.

The Intel Corp., which has 10,000 employees at its computer chip plants in Chandler, is donating $300 million over the next four years toward a global education effort spearheaded by former President Bill Clinton.

California-based Intel and the Clinton Global Initiative want to train more than 1.5 million teachers in 15 countries -- including the U.S., Mexico, India, China, Chile, Egypt, Turkey and Russia -- on how to integrate technology into lesson plans.

The group also raises money to deal with other global issues, such as Third World economic development, children's health care and the strife in Sudan.

A host of large multinational corporations and foundations are also involved with Clinton's efforts, including Google, Deutsche Bank, Pfizer, Hewlett-Packard, Citi Foundation, Proctor & Gamble and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

MTV And CGI's 'Giving' Event: Bill Clinton, Bono, Shakira Call Young People To Action
Wyclef, Alicia Keys, Chris Rock and others also spoke and performed at the landmark event at the Apollo Theater on Saturday night.

By Jayson Rodriguez

NEW YORK — For an evening that was all about "giving," Bill Clinton, Bono, Wyclef, Shakira, Chris Rock and Alicia Keys made sure they gave the audience an evening to remember — and be inspired by — on Saturday night at the Apollo Theater.

"CGI and MTV Present: Giving - Live at the Apollo" capped the three-day philanthropic summit convened by the former president's Clinton Global Initiative — heads of state, celebrities and others made 245 pledges regarding health, the environment and more during the push. The event was co-sponsored by thinkMTV.

>
Shortly after his opening remarks, Clinton was joined onstage by his invited guests, whom he described as "givers" — referencing his recently released book "Giving" and the night's overarching message.

>
" is so narcotic," Clinton explained. "You'll probably start giving four hours, then six hours, and drop anything else.

"Just start where you are," he added.

"That sounds like a song title," Bono intercepted, drawing more laughs.

>

Keys, along with Shakira and surprise guest Wyclef, capped the night's festivities with a series of memorable performances.

The R&B chanteuse gracefully performed a new track, the stirring "Superwoman." Wyclef played two songs, "If I Were President ..." and a cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," after which Shakira gave a striking performance of "Underneath Your Clothes." Following that, 'Clef and Shakira brought the crowd to its feet with the Colombian singer's "Hips Don't Lie."
