''If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it" - Clayton Williams and the Hillary '08 campaign

Back in 1990, Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams sent his own campaign against Democratic candidate Ann Richards into a downward spiral when he compared Texas weather to rape: "If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it."

But nowadays, it seems that some in NY Senator Hillary Clinton's camp are using the same argument against their political opponents, despite the fact that not only are the Senator's positions on Iraq and health care at great variance with the rank-and-file of the Democratic party, but the primaries in Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada are still months away.

In a campaign season that has proven to be surprisingly lackluster for both Democrats and Republicans alike, the controversy over Clinton's campaign seems to be galvanizing many Democrats. First, there's her aforementioned position on health care, where socialized medicine has now given way to a big payoff for insurance companies. Then there's Iraq, where she will not commit to having all US troops out of Iraq until perhaps 2013. Her recent statements about the legality and Constitutionality of torture have been ambivalent at best. And there have been increasing complaints that her campaign workers have been strongarming dissenters and squashing free speech at political rallies.

So now is the time for Clinton to lay all of her cards on the table, including the ones she's been keeping close to her chest. And it's also time for her supporters to swallow a little humble pie instead of resorting to the Clayton Williams defense.

Because there are two words that continue to haunt the Clinton campaign, and will do so well into 2008 - Howard Dean.

Why in the world are you bringing Clayton Williams' bullshit into this?

I'm supporting Edwards, so I'm not on board the Hillary bandwagon. But using Williams' comment in any kind of comparison to Hillary's campaign is just stupid. It was hardly the concept of inevitability that was so offensive about Willams' remark.
