Obama's Iraq policy will have troops out by the end of 2008.
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 03:45 PM by AtomicKitten
Many are cackling over the debate question asking the contenders to make a PROMISE that no one in their sane mind can possibly make unless, of course, they have a functional crystal ball. This was another trap set by Media Heathers as fodder to be harvested and used as ammunition by the GOP candidate in the general election.

On edit: Great analysis here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1941289&mesg_id=1941289

On 9/12/07, Barack Obama released his policy position on withdrawal from Iraq:

Obama: Troops out of Iraq, by end of 2008

by John McCormick

CLINTON, Iowa – Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama this afternoon called for an immediate start to the withdrawal of all U.S. combat forces from Iraq -- with a goal of full removal by the end of 2008 -- as he suggested the nation has lost its way because of the war.

"We're not going to be truly united and resolute as Americans until we can stop holding our breath, until we can come together to reclaim our foreign policy and our politics and end this war that has cost us too much," he said.

Obama's plan, outlined before an audience of about 500 at Ashford University, calls for the complete pullout of troops by the end of next year by bringing home one or two brigades each month.

"Let me be clear: There is no military solution in Iraq. There never was," he said. "'The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq's leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year – now."

* snip *

"The American people have the right instincts on Iraq," Obama said. "It's time to heed their judgment…I will be a president who listens to the American people, not a president who ignores the American people."

* snip *

Obama called for a new constitutional convention in Iraq to be convened by the United Nations. He also called for increasing U.S. aid to $2 billion this year to help displaced Iraqis, plus more support for social services for refugees in neighboring countries.

*** (( of note here is Obama was singled out on Bill Moyers yesterday as being the ONLY candidate that has spoken about Iraqi refugees )) ***

* snip *

"After all the flawed justifications for his failed policy, recently he invoked Vietnam as a reason to stay in Iraq," Obama said. "Let's put aside the strange reasoning – that all would have been well if we had just stayed the course in Vietnam. Let's put it aside and leave it where it belongs – in the past."

* snip *

"Now is not the time to reargue the Vietnam War – we did that in the 2004 election, and it wasn't very pretty," he said. "I don't want to fight the battles of the 1960s. I want to reclaim the future for America."

He just wouldn't PROMISE anything hypothetically or otherwise because he doesn't know the future and isn't dumb enough to fall into that trap to be used against him by the GOP in the general election.

It's all a game set up by the Media Heathers to hamstring our candidates and provide material for the GOP to exploit. This goes for all the candidates.

Kucinich (and others) can pretty much say (and does) whatever he wants because it won't affect his standing of non-viability.

14. Darmouth College debate
Obama said this:

"What I can promise is that if there are still troops in Iraq when
I take office -- which it appears there may be, unless we can get some
of our Republican colleagues to change their mind and cut off funding
without a timetable -- if there's no timetable -- then I will
drastically reduce our presence there to the mission of protecting our
embassy, protecting our civilians, and making sure that we're carrying
out counterterrorism activities there."

I have a problem with the "carrying out counterterrorism activities." Clinton said something about continuing to fight the presence of Al Qaeda in Iraq. I'm not comfortable with either of these ideas.

17. I share your concern.
But I am also convinced the Dems are falling back into their comfort spot of trying to infuse testosterone into their demeanor to look like bad asses. That entire meme is just nonsense.

We need to get the hell out of Dodge tout suite.

10. here's an excellent analysis in GD
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1941289&mesg_id=1941289

I wrote extensively about Gore vs. the MSM during 2000, and this is an age-old MSM technique intended to bamboozle vis a vis hypotheticals and provide fodder for those seeking ammunition.

The not too subtle irony is that it is being used by detractors on both sides of the aisle. It's an opportunistic cheap shot tee'd up by Russert to hamstring the Democratic contenders in the general.

Enjoy the ride.

15. Yarp!!!
I agree. I wish the candidates would stop running the general in the primary and not be afraid to answer such bullshit questions. But it is what it is, and I was looking for him to step out and he didn't, and that sucks.

But still, I would vote for him in a heartbeat over Hillary and Edwards because of their complicity in going to war with Iraq, and I'm convinced Kucinich can't break 10%.

Paging Al Gore.

9. And, there's the debate transcript: (unless that's a fake too?)
BO- "I believe that we should have all our troops out by 2013, but I
don't want to make promises, not knowing what the situation's going to
be three or four years out."
http://ipol-2008.blogspot.com/2007/09/transcript-of-dartmouth-debate.html
So, is the transcript a fake, too?

11. my point seems to be escaping you
And this is precisely why the GOP-inspired BS express is boarded by opportunists that put intraparty partisanship before the truth, and the truth is the MSM is not a friend to Democrats.

If you choose to use this as a cudgel against ANY of the Democrats, that's your prerogative.

Enjoy the ride, but don't forget to thank the sponsors of this hypothetical red herring - the GOP and MSM.

18. That doesn't contradict his plan
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 05:17 PM by maximusveritas
He would like to have our troops out as soon as possible. His plan allows for them out by 2008 if implemented now.
What he said in the debates is that while he wouldn't promise to have them out by 2013, he believes they should be out at that time, barring any unforseen circumstances.

20. Nope, his policy statement states clearly his goal is out COMPLETELY by the end of 2008 --
at two brigades a month. The fact that he did not fall for the PROMISE trap set by Russert doesn't negate that.
