Vanity Fair article: "Going After Gore"
Article on lies about Gore fron Maureen Dowd, etc.:

http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/10/gore200710?currentPage=1

Al Gore couldn't believe his eyes: as the 2000 election heated up, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other top news outlets kept going after him, with misquotes ("I invented the Internet"), distortions (that he lied about being the inspiration for Love Story), and strangely off-the-mark needling, while pundits such as Maureen Dowd appeared to be charmed by his rival, George W. Bush. For the first time, Gore and his family talk about the effect of the press attacks on his campaign—and about his future plans—to the author, who finds that many in the media are re-assessing their 2000 coverage.

by Evgenia Peretz October 2007

As he was running for president, Al Gore said he'd invented the Internet; announced that he had personally discovered Love Canal, the most infamous toxic-waste site in the country; and bragged that he and Tipper had been the sole inspiration for the golden couple in Erich Segal's best-selling novel Love Story (made into a hit movie with Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal). He also invented the dog, joked David Letterman, and gave mankind fire.

Could such an obviously intelligent man have been so megalomaniacal and self-deluded to have actually said such things? Well, that's what the news media told us, anyway.

2. Read that...
Good article. Actually, the whole issue is worth the cover price. Lots of good articles in it this time. I especially love reading Graydon Carter's editorial page.

3. I would like to thank Evgenia Peretz and Vanity Fair for having the
journalistic integrity to print this column, I just wonder who else out there in fourth estate guardian watchdogs for democracy land has the courage or fortitude to follow suit.

Also I would like to thank you for this thread Eric J.

More than happy to kick and recommend.

6. Nice article, but a little late
The press continues tampering with our democracy instead of enforcing it like they're suppose to, and then you always get the journalists, actually the better journalists, who come out and condemn the past actions of mainstream media. But nothing changes and it keeps happening. With each passing year I increasingly lose faith in America and its democracy.

7. Great article, but about 7 years too late.
When the media tore down Gore and handled Bush with kid gloves, it was obvious this country was being manipulated by strong forces that didn't care about the Constitution or about the law.

9. Don't think I will tire from seeing this
posted again and again on DU. It needs to be widely circulated and understood. The media does and IS doing this with ALL the democratic candidates. Heads up.

Thanks for posting.
