Thompson, Obama "Win" in Farm Bureau Poll
Compiled By Staff
October 1, 2007

It may be several months before the primaries, but Husker Harvest Days visitors this fall indicated they favor Fred Thompson and Barack Obama as the Republican and Democrat candidates, respectively, for president.

That was how a straw poll turned out at the Nebraska Farm Bureau building at HHD Sept. 11-13.

Jay Ferris, Farm Bureau director of grassroots programs, says 552 farmers and ranchers voted in the non-scientific poll. Of that total, 387 votes were cast for Republicans and 165 for Democrats. Thirty-six percent of those casting votes for Republicans threw their support behind Thompson and 35% of those voting for Democrats favored Obama.

Hillary Clinton received 31% of those voting for the Democrats.

Of the Republican candidates, John McCain received 17% of the vote and Rudy Giuliani received 15%.

Participants were asked this question: "If the primaries were held today, which of the following candidates would you support for president in the primary election?"

"People seem to enjoy taking part in public opinion polls and Husker Harvest Days was a good venue to measure where Nebraska farmers and ranchers stand in the presidential election," Ferris says.

1. In the Omaha, Nebraska South Omaha Pet Poll, 31% of the cats and
29% of the dogs say that they're sick of polls and think all humans have lost their minds in the United States so they are voting for Edwards because he's the only real democrat running. Gerbils and white mice are voting for Hillary because they like her cackle and at least she shows up to vote. And 42% of the parakeets and 39% of say that they love the way Barrie can deliver a speech and deftly do a complete 180 on what he said 2 days later. No pets liked Biden or Dodd, and when asked about Richardson they replied "Who?"

2. My dogs think Edwards is full of shit.
They realize it's increasingly difficult for a man to both talk about poverty as though he really understands and still get $400 haircuts and participates in hedge funds that deny poor people housing after major storms.

3. My wife thinks Edwards is a liar.

I personally like the guy, and have to constantly defend him, but pretending he is the only "real" Democrat screams of desperation.

BTW, why do you think Edwards is so much different than Obama. And, specific positions would help your argument.

4. Why do Obama and Edwards always win the straw polls, and Hillary always win the phone polls?
I think I have an idea, I'm just curious to see what others say.

5. Wouldn't that be beautiful?
Obama vs. Thompson

That would truly sum up the Democrat vs. Republican divide...

Young. charismatic man vs. Crusty old white man
Man of values vs. Political chameleon
Thoughtful and reasoned policy vs. flippant and arbitraty policy

I can only pray...How could anyone choose Thompson over Obama?
