8. Well, it got him elected....
(that, along with some rigging)... but voters do want experience.

14. No, of course not. Nothing would've helped
him be a good president since he is lacking a brain and a heart, but I was just commenting on the fact that being governor did make many voters *believe* he had enough experience.

Not to mention that Daddy bought him that election as well as the 2000 election.

9. Why CNN even asks the question is beyond me.
Did they ask it during the idiot bush coupe? I think after 2000, anyone should know the question is irrelevant. As long as the dancing supremes don't care, what does it matter? Our votes don't matter. Just ask the supremes. Clarence is doing a tour to promote his pity me book, maybe they should ask him if experience mattered when they selected bush.

5. This is why I was really hoping he'd wait until the next round to run...
I think he would make a good president, but I worry that if he does win the nomination, this will be what the repubs bombard the media with, and since the terror/fear crap worked so well for them last time, I think they could use that combined with his inexperience to turn voters away. Hell, CNN is already starting.....

6. It's not like Hillary or Edwards has so much more political experience.
I don't count being the President's wife as relevant experience, except maybe for finding your way around the inside of the Whitehouse.

Edwards has not been in the Senate the past few years. But he has been using his time wisely, and has solid campaigning experience from being on the ticket in 2004.

It's a shame that the person with the most relevant experience isn't in this race (at least not yet).

7. Thanks for posting, but it's a crap poll
Any poll singling out one candidate is bound to give skewed results, as no candidate has over 50% of the electorate's support at this point.

Hopefully, my fellow DU Obama supporters will help to even out the results a bit.

I can't tell you the number of times I've seen "DU this poll" here. What I said is really no different.

11. I voted 'yes' even though I'm supporting Edwards. For me,
political experience is not the most important factor in choosing a president. Typically, CNN is not asking the right question.

12. I would say yes
but the real question is, "does Barak Obama have enough experience to foil the right wing attack machine during the campaign." Sadly on that one, I'd have to say no. But that's true for all candidates except the one who will most likely win the nomination.

13. Why don't they ask that about Fred
"Lazy Bones, Serial Philanderer" Thompson? WTF has he done except for one term as senator where he did exactly dip-shit? What about Ghouliani? Two terms as NYC's Mayor?

WTF? If they're gonna ask about Obama's experience, then where the fuck are their questions about those two?

of experience.

Biden, Richardson, Dodd, Kucinich, and yes, Gravel, have twice the amount of experience as both Obama and Hillary.

28. Obama is more experienced than either Clinton or Edwards
Obama
8 years as State Senator in Illinois
3 years as Senator in Illinois

8 + 3 = 11

Clinton
7 years as Senator in New York
8 years as First Lady (not a legislative position, so 0 is the number. 1 if you count failed healthcare attempts, so we'll give you 1)

7 + 1 = 8

Edwards
6 years as Senator in North Carolina

6 + 0 = 6

Robert Reich said it very well:

Bill Clinton was 46 when he was elected president in 1992 – the same age as Barack Obama is now. But Clinton has questioned Barack Obama’s readiness to become president – arguing that by the time he himself ran in 1992 he had far more experience than Obama. He also states that when he decided not to run in 1988 (when he was “closer to Senator Obama” in experience) he didn’t think he “knew enough and had served enough and done enough to run” at that point in his own career. While I can understand Bill Clinton’s eagerness to undermine his wife’s most significant primary opponent, he is not, I believe, completely ingenuous. I happened to talk with him in 1988 before he decided not to run, and also in 1991 before he decided to run the following year. His calculation at both times was decidedly rational and entirely political, based on whether he could win.

But more to the point, it strikes me as unfair to claim that Obama lacks relevant experience for the presidency. When he ran in 1992, Bill Clinton had been the governor of a small, rural southern state; as such, he had only limited experience with national issues and no foreign policy experience to speak of. Incidentally, at this point in the 2008 presidential election, Hillary Clinton has served as an elected official in the U.S. Senate for not quite eight years, and before that a First Lady in the White House. Obama has so far held elective office for almost twelve years, at both levels of government – first as an Illinois state senator and then as a U.S. Senator. Before that he was a community organizer among Chicago’s poor, and then a civil rights lawyer – two experiences that in my view are critically relevant to anyone seeking to become president of all Americans. Obama’s international experience comes first hand – his father was a goat-herder in Kenya, and Obama spent a portion of his childhood in Indonesia. And as an African-American, with all the personal experience that implies, Obama seems particularly well qualified to understand the issues that need to be addressed in order to unify America and renew the nation’s moral authority around the world.
