24. LOL! (psst, watch out for the over-reaction from the hillarians, now.)
What I am waiting for is the 'splainin that they will do when the corrected poll numbers come out and her 33% lead turns out to be as whimsical as my farts.

But when I see crap posted about wanting to vote 3rd party (or not voting) if HRC gets the nomination then believe me - I'm gonna scream BULLSHIT!

And they are done every single day.

43. It's EITHER; the spelling is just a matter of personal preference.
"Town Criers" were yelling it for a century before the first
literate "Chronicalers" ever wrote it down.

And by the time that happened, no one knew who first yelled it,
and no one agreed upon which it was: "here", or "hear".

Both make perfect sense in context; I personally prefer "hear hear"
simply because it strikes me as a more PRETENTIOUS affectation, and
therefore provides a better artistic balance to my near-constant
muttering of "rhubarb, rhubarb".

But that's just how -I- roll; your mileage may vary.

Cecil at the Straight Dope is usually pretty good about these things. I'm not saying he has to be right, but I'd like to know if any reliable sources agree with "here, here" as an option.

"Dear Straight Dope:

When you agree with someone, do you say "Here Here!" or "Hear Hear" ? And what does it mean? What is the origin of "Here Here" or "Hear Hear"? --Tymoma195

SDSTAFF Veg replies:

The correct term is, "hear, hear!" It is an abbreviation for "hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!"

Of course, if the speaker is actually asking a question, such as "and just where do you think we should open the new strip club?" it's not hard to imagine that at least one yahoo in attendance might yell, "here, here!" But this would be the exception that proves the rule.

--SDSTAFF Veg

Straight Dope Science Advisory Board"

Edit/Update: It has just occurred to me to wonder why a town crier might be shouting his agreement with something anyway. "Hear ye, hear ye" versus "here ye, here ye" as a call for listeners I could see, but I'm a little suspicious about the crier yelling "amen!" at himself.

By the time the first "newspaper reporter" had such a slow news day
that he bothered to mention the well-known fact that people
used the common phrase, "hear, hear", the origins of the phrase
were already lost to history.

Most everyone agreed 'twas a contraction used by "town criers" for
generations before penny broadsheets (What you kids call "newspapers")
were invented , but no one knew just exactly WHAT had been CONTRACTED.

Some said it was short for "Come here, come here", others said
it was short for "Hear ye, hear ye".

By the time anyone cared to ask what it meant, no one really knew for sure anymore.
Just like "hello", or "fuck".

However, if they were alive today, I'm certain they would all agree
that Cecil@theStraightDope is talking out of his ass.

Rhubarb, rhubarb.......

48. Not buying it.
Sure, I appreciate your opinion and all, but I'm still not convinced.

Neither, it seems, are:

1. Merriam Webster - "4 -- often used in the expression Hear! Hear! to express approval (as during a speech)."

2. The Modern British Parliament - "The hon. Member for Witney (Mr. Woodward) sought repeatedly to dismiss as prejudiced those of us who disagree with him.

Ms Armstrong: Hear, hear."

3. Some German guy on the internet -- "The same expression exists in German, and it's "hört, hört" which means "hear, hear".
posted by amf at 9:23 AM on November 1"

4. http://www.phrases.org.uk - Hear hear Meaning A shout of acclamation or agreement. Origin Originated in the British parliament in the 18th century as a contraction of 'hear him, hear him'. It is still often heard there although it is often used ironically these days.

5. The Canadian House of Commons -- "Some hon. members: Hear, hear."

6. And a completely fictional pedant I call "Mr. Todkins of the Libertyville Expresspike" -- "What a completely, utterly, nonsensical, and in fact, downright silly question."

(And on a related side note, it's not "rhubarb, rhubarb," although that is becoming a commonly used modern misspelling. Long before there were directors to shout it in front of nearly illiterate reporters from Hollywood smut rags, Shakespearean actors would mill around deciding where to go after a performance. "Brew. Bar. Brew. Bar." I'd cite it, but my insistence alone should be enough to convince you.)

Just how does being supportive of Hillary Rodham Clinton throw us into a category that you've adjudged
doesn't allow us to use common sense? How juvenile that sounds; surely you don't really mean that;
or maybe you do. It must be miserable to hate someone as much as you do Senator Clinton; as you can't

34. Here you go.

Clicked on GDP and two of the first three threads were Hillary supporters complaining about Hillary opponents. A handful of threads down was a self-professed Edwards supporter complaining about Hillary opponents, but you already rejected that. Several more threads down I finally found a thread criticizing Hillary.

Their candidate is doing fairly well right now. I'm surprised at what delicate little flowers they are, to open DU and see 3 or 4 posts recommended up to greatest that all are basically whinefests about how unfair it is that she is criticized so. Well, sorry guys, but if you support the most right leaning choice in a Democratic primary then come to DU proselytizing her greatness without so much as a single issue to support your case, don't expect a tea party.

44. To quote a level-headed poster on another thread...
(who happens to be me)...I'd like to present the following bit of advice, which I'm thinking about making my new sig.

"In fact, while I'm at it, I'd like to say that to everybody. Site-wide. Engage in debate, prove each other wrong, learn about the issues, get informed, make rational arguments, but don't resort to childishness, even in response to somebody who's already lowered themselves. I don't know what happened to the idea of "being the bigger person" in any given circumstance, but the immature verbal slapfights I've seen in my short time here should be beneath any informed voter whose opinion is worth a damn. Especially a Democrat. Leave it to the Republicans to shout people down, to substitute cheap Junior High wordplay for reason, to make vague accusations and to generally reduce debate to an Ann Coulterish dodgeball match where everybody thinks they win, but Democracy loses."

49. We used to be about issues, but we're over that now...
Anyone pissing on someone else's candidate is getting on my last nerve.

There is a serious, a precise, and a relevant difference between actual critique and analysis of the opposition candidate's position, and merely pissing on a candidate-- which is becoming all too frequent.

Seems to me that if a person actually begins to trash another candidate, they themselves must be out of ideas, and are resorting to the last resort of the ignorant, and in doing so advertise the basest and the ugliest parts of themselves... much like what Limbaugh does every day.

Sometimes I wish it were limited to the supporters of one candidate, but it seems to be some of the supporters of all the candidates who, being incapable of positive support for their own chosen candidate, decide to engage in Glen Beck style tactics against the other candidate.

This message brought to you by Democratic Underground-- "We used to be about issues, but we're over that now..."
