Seaman Apprentice Shayna Ann Schnell, 19, of Tell City, Ind., died as a result of injuries suffered from a vehicle accident. Schnell was serving as a master-at-arms assigned to Naval Security Force Bahrain, Jebel Ali Detachment, United Arab Emirates.

DUBAI - A local sailor serving in the Middle East died this week from injuries she sustained in a car accident in Dubai...
...Schnell was visiting Dubai when the Sept. 24 accident occurred. She was in a taxi en route to a doctor’s office when a tire on the taxi failed, sending the vehicle into a brick wall. The wall then collapsed on the vehicle.

1. Aww. That's dreadful. Such a young kid, only an E-2. Her parents must be beside themselves.

You do realize, though, this is not a war injury. It's just a sad taxi accident that was worsened by lousy construction.

People are routinely assigned to Bahrain, which is a major fleet concentration center. It's a great duty station for those who like gold jewelry and it is a short tour, too.

And she was on leave or TAD to Dubai, which is a delightful location, when this sad accident happened.

2. How ironic and sad--to serve near a war zone, and die in a freak taxi cab accident.

Her parents were probably comforted (until now) by the fact that she was stationed in Bahrain instead of Iraq. RIP, Seaman Schnell, and thank you for your service.
