John Edwards supporters...need information
Did Edwards receive a deferment for Vietnam? My research shows that he was too young to be drafted, as the last draft was in 1972, and the lottery for his year of birth was held in '72, for the following year, which never occured.

3. Totally unfair...
Woulda, coulda, shoulda.....how would you know? Making a judgment of character based on appearances in very shallow and rather ignorant. The guy was in high school!

5. Are you really trying to analyze what a teenage Edwards was like?

I think your scorn should be reserved to topics on which you have evidence, obnoxiousdrunk... maybe you should post on the "Whom would Andrew Jackson have endorsed" thread.
:sarcasm:

6. Make sure you have a designated driver today.
Someone could get hurt considering the condition you are already in.

7. Kind of hard to get drafted when you're in HS
But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of a perfectly good smear.

15. pathetic slap
how in the world would you know that?

cheap and ill-informed post. delete this if necessary, moderators, but this junk can't be let stand.

Edwards at that time was studying, working, playing football (think Rudy, the walk-on at Notre Dane - he had neither the size nor the talent, but he had the heart - did you?) and through these efforts became the first in his family to go to college.

your post is pathetic. delete this if you want, as I said, or ban me for attacking another poster, but it is just too idiotic to leave alone.

9. You already seem to know the answer. I'm not sure what you're asking here
if he was too young, then why would he need a deferment.

10. John Edwards wasn't too young to be drafted.....as he turned 19 in June of 1972....

but it appears that his draft number was never called.
--------------------------------------
Of the top three of the eight Democratic candidates, only former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina became eligible for the Vietnam era draft. But toward the end of the draft he received a lottery number high enough that he was never called to serve. Rather than volunteer, though, he chose a career in the law. Earlier this month, he suggested "some level of mandatory service to our country" for young people.

---------------------------------------

The year Edwards became eligible for the draft, the military drafted 49,514 men, according to Selective Service records - tapping draftees who had lottery numbers as high as 95. The draft was abolished in July 1973.

646 young men born the same year as Edwards were inducted into the military.

John Edwards' draft number was 178

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, 53, had a draft number that was never called.
