McEntee to Bush: “Veto is Callous and Immoral”
Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the Presidential Veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
“If we can find billions to spend on the never-ending war in Iraq, we can find the money to protect the lives and health of low-income American children. President Bush’s veto is callous and immoral. It is brazen partisan politics at its worst. Congress should waste no time in overriding him.
“We’re going to battle Bush on this and other budget issues every single day that is left in his failed administration, an administration that is characterized by mismanagement, misjudgments and misconduct. Today’s malicious veto is more of the same.”
At a press conference yesterday with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and other Congressional leaders, AFSCME and a consortium of other groups announced a $3 million to $5 million paid advertising campaign to flood Capitol Hill with hundreds of thousands of calls, letters and E-mails, all demanding that members of Congress vote to override Bush’s SCHIP veto. In the next few weeks, more than 200 events all across the nation will focus on protecting SCHIP. AFSCME also released the results of a public opinion survey on these issues. The results are clear, on issue after issue, Americans believe George Bush has the wrong priorities.
