N.M. [Heather Wilson] Congresswoman to Seek Senate Seat
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Rep. Heather Wilson says she plans to run for the Senate seat being vacated in New Mexico by Pete Domenici, her fellow Republican and political mentor.

In her announcement Friday, Wilson praised Domenici and listed traditional Republican campaign themes of limited government, low taxes, strong national defense and improving education.

"All our children deserve a life where they can be safe in their neighborhoods, with good schools to go to, with high-paying jobs close to home, in a country that keeps them safe from threats to our way of life," Wilson told a small group of family and supporters. Her husband, Jay Hone, and their two children stood beside her.

Wilson is the first major candidate to declare her candidacy for the seat, which Domenici has held since 1973. Earlier Friday, Democratic Rep. Tom Udall announced that he would not run for the seat.

4. I read in an article that Richardson could go all the way to the early prez primaries
before declaring his intentions regarding the Senate seat.

John Kerry was "failing" in his bid for the prez nomination at this point in 2003.
Then something happened.

She may be an idiot in that she's a republican, which requires being an idiot on some level, but she's also very slick and very sharp. I attended the final debate between her and Romero 3 years ago, and had I gone there as an undecided and uninformed voter, who didn't know much about either of 'em, I would have left there convinced to vote for Heather. She was smart, and she was smooth. She was brought here specifically to be groomed to take over from "St. Pete" and with the sickening media lovefest for Pete now under way, she's going to have a huge boost as heir apparent to the inexplicably popular Domenici. Which is one reason she'll be a formidable candidate; I would love it if the prediction that any Dem will win, and with 65% of the vote came true, but I'm wondering, with all due respect, if that poster is from NM, because I can't comprehend how anyone from here could make that prediction. The east side of the state is very conservative, and Heather's been winning (although barely last time) in a district with a majority Democratic registration. If you are from here, I wonder on what you base that prediction; ( and this is being said in a friendly manner- I really would love it if I could be convinced that we can easily beat Heather). I hope we can find a stronger opponent than the last two she had in her congressional races, and I was disappointed to see Udall decide against it today. As far as baggage from the U.S. Attorney scandal, I really wonder about both the attention spans as well as comprehension levels of large numbers of voters, especially, again, on the east side, where the last approval numbers for Dubya (several months ago but still...) were in the SIXTIES.

7. Let's face it...
...if the only "name" Democrat to face her in the election is Martin Chavez, then we NM Dems have blown it again. Udall isn't in and I think he could beat her. The only "name" Dem who could beat her is Richardson. That's the reality we face. Sen. Heather Wilson--what a nightmare. Then again, if Pearce jumps in and beats Heather, we might have a chance with Marty(who I despise, but is better than any Repug).

9. I'm rootin for Pearce all the way for the repub nomination...
way too right wing for most of the state except the east side, Farmington, and maybe Catron County. Even Madrid could beat him. Go Pearce!

6. Heather Wilson associated with Mark Foley

Republican Congresswoman on Congressional Page Board buried file on husband's child abuse (Underage sexual molestation of a male) allegation.

A file allegedly suppressed by Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) has been obtained by RAW STORY.

Filed as a case of child abuse in 1993, it contends that Wilson's husband Jay Hone, an Albuquerque attorney, touched a then-16 year old boy "in a manner that was not welcome."

Six years after the incident, in 2001, Wilson began a three year term on the House Page Board, where she sat while rumors of Mark Foley's inappropriate behavior with underage men were reportedly widespread.

Wilson also currently serves on the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's caucus.

8. I think she'll be slapped down fairly easily.
She's been weakened by the scandal, and she's a jerk by herself.

10. My sister and her husband moved to New Mexico last year.
They are very, very strong Democrats who put their money where their mouths are. Not that this guarantees a win but they will do their part.

Loving the idea of Richardson turning around and declaring himself a candidate for this but I also like him in the Presidential race. Ah well, I like him as VP also. Shit, I just like him, period.

When would Richardson have to declare by in order to run?

11. Did anyone see today's editorial in Albq tribune?
apparently Pete Domenici is the second greatest American who ever lived, just being barely edged out for # 1 by Jesus ( and don't you damn godless heathen lib-ruls dare say Jesus wasn't an American). And the Trib is actually the more progressive of our two papers ( by default, but still) , and all this foaming at the mouth adulation for St. Pete (not just at the Trib but on all the local TV "news") is going to be a huge advantage for his handpicked successor, Heather... I really fear she's going to be a senator for as long as she wants . Hope to hell I'm wrong.

12. One name:David Iglesias will be her downfall and
the real picture is beginning to unfold in the premature firing of seven or eight (or more) prosecutors by the Justice Department. David Iglesias, the star of the hearings, testified that both Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson called to ask him about an ongoing corruption investigation and whether indictments would be brought down before the November elections. According to Iglesias, Wilson, in a call placed on or about October 16th, 2006, went so far as to say that she was "hearing about sealed indictments" and wanted to know more. Iglesias told the committee, "We cannot talk about sealed indictment," and explained how he dodged the congresswoman's question by giving her information that was in the public record. Iglesias said that she "was not happy."

This sealed the deal on Senator Pete Domenici and his not seeking re-election and I am sure this will be a big scandal in the Senate race in New Mexico....

13. I wish that were true...
...but it hasn't seemed to hurt her so far. Marty Chavez won't win Alb. or the southern part of the state and Heather won't win the north, but Heather trumps Marty because of greater population.

14. Marty's controversial in Burque...
but not unpopular. As for Cruces and other southern burgs, the Hispanic population may turn-out for Chavez.
