Will Al Gore win a Nobel Peace Prize?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071005/ap_on_re_eu/norway_nobel_prizes

OSLO, Norway - Al Gore is a front-runner for the Nobel Peace Prize — if you believe some experts. Problem is, they're only guessing.

The Nobel awards being announced next week cover the range of human endeavor, from peacemaking to scientific discovery to literature, yet share a tradition of mystery and wild speculation about who might win.
"I've been surprised almost every time," Stein Toennesson, director of the International Peace Research Institute-Oslo, told The Associated Press on Friday.

========

Watch how Faux News, El Pigbo (Phony Soldiers) Rush Limbaugh, Ann "The Man" Coulter and the Gestapo-AFA reacts if Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize! Darth Vader Cheney will have another heart attack and Bunnypants Bush will invade Oslo.

1. Yes, if nothing else to make a statement against the administration
and it would piss the bush administration off. You have two people, taking two seperate jouneys. One recognized positively by the world, and another one dispised by the world

3. Yes, and I hope and pray that Al Gore wins
I think Al Gore's efforts on behalf of our environment are worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.

2. I doubt it
They're unlikely to give a US politician the peace prize so soon after Jimmy Carter won it.

I know people here will be really disappointed if he doesn't win, but there really ARE other, deserving people in the world dedicating their lives to peace and human rights work. We should still be happy if one of those people wins.

4. There are always many deserving people
But Al Gore is just as deserving as anyone else.

5. He's deserving of many things
but not necessarily the Nobel Peace Prize.

It's not like he's ENDED global warming. He's raising awareness, and that's great. But it is a level of abstraction to say that talking about global warming falls into the traditional categories for which people have won the Peace Prize.

I do wish, however, that the Nobel Institute would add a prize for Environmentalism. It seems to be a field worthy of its own award. But since they've only ever added one category (economics) in the 100+ years of the awards, it's probably not likely.

6. Of course he won't
a) he hasn't done anything even remotely nobel-worthy

b) it means nothing that he's nominated, just about anyone in any position of real responsibility can nominate someone for the nobel prize

7. they'll be right
staging a one act bs play (much ado about nuttin) to keep the herd excited while the WH murderers plot their getaway is exactly what the busheviks will love to see. Just like 'the west wing' fed some dreary need in 'liberal' hearts all the years of repuke reality maybe was part'n'parcel of the very reality that the tv show succored against, giving Gore, a man who has acted earnestly in vain for decades, another sweet role to play while Rome burns to the ground. "Darn it" he says. And foxnews etc gets to act outrageds by the sham! All the while giggling like ted bundy in the coed's bedroom.
And we go along with it.

8. Carter was nominated about a dozen times before they gave it to him
who else is on the short list? Oh it would be such a sweet taste if he did win it but I don't think this is the year.

Rent the documentary "Nobelity" and you will be amazed by the vast variety of accomplishments that have resulted in a Nobel Prize in one category or another.

We watched it at a seminar at my church one night then sat around and discussed it for an hour or so.

9. No one knows who's on the "short list"
that's kept pretty confidential.

10. I suspected as much. When Carter finally won, we had a "brag" on it at Sunday School
($1 donation to brag on something cool, normally that your kid or another class member etc did)
and the whole class stood up and cheered.

wonderful moment

11. i think he'll get it
not necessarily on the merits, but purely as a slap at the fact he was not president and bush was

probably taints the award and the award process, but who gives a shit? it's an international body thumbing its nose at bush. Works for me.

12. I admire the man, but does making a movie really equal the work of Unicef or MSF?
Lots of people are struggling to bring peace to the world, from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) or the "Elders" group trying to save lives in Darfur. Gore's move opened a lot of eyes. He's made it harder to ignore global warming. It's a great service to the world, but not quite the "heroic" effort that most Nobel laureates demonstrate.
