Why are we in a Trance?
Edited on Sat Oct-06-07 11:50 PM by pirhana
I know this is from Peggy Noonan - but I thought it was good enough to post here.

Clinton supporters - this one is not for you.
But I urge everyone else to read this.
I'm not going to cut and paste - this one you should read through.

The Trance:

Bush . . . Clinton . . . Bush . . . Clinton . . . Getting very sleepy . . .

1. Good column.

I'd never have read a WSJ opinion or a Noonan column on my own, either, so thanks for bringing this one out into the light.

My favorite snips:
Barack Obama has a great thinking look. I mean the look he gets on his face when he's thinking, not the look he presents in debate, where they all control their faces knowing they may be in the reaction shot and fearing they'll look shrewd and clever, as opposed to open and strong. I mean the look he gets in an interview or conversation when he's listening and not conscious of his expression. It's a very present look. He seems more in the moment than handling the moment.

and:
You get the impression Mr. Obama trusts himself to think, as if something good might happen if he does. What a concept. Anyway, I've started to lean forward a little when he talks.

and:
Mr. Obama's experience, as we all know, is as limited as Mrs. Clinton's, which is to say limited indeed. ... He has held national office for only 3-1/2 years, and before that was a state legislator for eight years. But he has impressed people, and not with money, résumé or clout but something rarer, natural gifts. That's not nothing. Big talent is rare, and deserves consideration.

and:
Mr. Obama is fortunate to have one (a supporter) with the grace and vigor of Ted Sorensen, John F. Kennedy's great staffer and speechwriter, who told me this week, "I am supporting Obama." ... When I asked if his support was connected in any way to the idea of breaking away from the Bush-Clinton-Bush rotation, he said, "Above all, I believe this country needs change, and continuing the 20-year hold on the White House of the same two families is not my idea of change."

Awesome.

GObama!

2. There was definitely alot of praise for Obama - but also praise for
Biden and Dodd as well.

I think the bottom line is she is asking - with such a great field of candidates - why are we in this Trance?

3. Agreed.
But being an Obama supporter, I was naturally drawn most to her positive comments regarding him. :D

5. I wish she would have. Maybe it was the realization of what could happen here.

6. Probably not.
But don't we welcome prodigals and converts, those who have come to "see the light" at last, however late?

All those conservative readers that Noonan has out there in Red State America may be positively influenced towards our Democratic candidates by this column, so I'm not throwing any stones at her now.

9. she hasn't seen any light, she is doing this because she thinks Hillary will be the nominee
and the Republican nominee , whoever it is will not be a Bush. she will be whoring for whoever the Republican is.

10. Whatever.
In the meantime... this is (1) a good column by a conservative writer, who is (2) well thought of among other conservatives and is (3) saying nice things about the Democratic candidates, which may (4) make her wavering, disillusioned readers consider their options among Democrats.

I'm very impressed with your clairvoyant insight into her future actions; however, I'm still happy that at this time she is saying nice things about our candidates.

11. Saying nice things about our candidates while summarizing how many Dems are feeling.
That is what impressed me enough to post a column by Noonan at DU.

12. Exactly.
And thank you for that. As mentioned earlier, I'd never have read WSJ opinion or Noonan on my own.

7. Why am I in a trance? Maybe because I feel like I've been kicked in the face for
the past 7 years...

8. Since Clinton is the front runner
Obviously, if we chose someone else, Peggy's Republican dears will have a better chance to win.
