Iowa repugs: Romney leads GOP, Thompson moves into second
Mitt Romney still leads in Iowa but Fred Thompson, a relative newcomer to the presidential race, has emerged as his nearest competitor in a new Des Moines Register poll of likely Republican caucus participants.

Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani are in a close fight for third place in the Iowa Poll taken over three days last week.

Romney, who has campaigned more often in Iowa than his Republican rivals, is the presidential choice of 29 percent of those who say they definitely or probably will attend the leadoff caucuses.

....

huckabee is actually beating ghouliani by one point.. this is great news for us because i really don't think multiple choice mitt is electable although fred thompson would be easier to beat still.

1. Romney has
higher national unfavorability numbers than Hillary - by a huge amount. Something like 57% said they would never vote for him. Think that was reported on Countdown on Friday if I remember correctly. He may be able to buy Iowa but I doubt he can carry that over to securing the nomination.

Huckabee worries me. If the wingnuts ever figure out that he is exactly what they want he could become the nominee.

2. Huckabee may gain strength.
He could attract the 'Zell Miller democrats' a la Reagan in 1980. His stance on social issues is to the left of all the pub candidates except 911iani. I wouldn't write him off just yet.

3. He's a rightwing baptist zealot
his social stances are hardly to the left of the others.

4. That's your opinion, not mine.
Sometimes you have to read between the lines.

5. Huckabee's fundraising is really, really bad. Ron Paul raised 5 times the $ as Huckster
and no one think Ron Paul is a serious contender.
