Two comments about Lynn Cheney's Daily Show interview
She said two specific things which deserve countering...

First was the old "history will look back upon the war" thing...

Well, last year, playing with my toddlers, I noticed one of the balls we were playing with was stamped "Made in Vietnam".

I'll bypass the usual build-up and ask you to consider that, as history is now being written by way of our trade with Vietnam, our being there had no productive value, as we LOST (so much for it having been another "domino" for the commies), and our sudden and complete pull-out, complete with the Embassy evacuation, in the end, as history writes it, didn't make any difference what so ever.

So, using that "history" argument, my observation is that we should immediately and completely pull out. I don't support us doing that, but the logic can take you either way...

Next came the jaw dropper - "We haven't been attacked in the following 6 years and I think Bush should be given credit for that"

Hmmm. I somehow recall us not being attacked for SEVEN years after the 1993 WTC bombing, but no one was given credit for THAT, in fact, QUITE THE OPPOSITE.

2. AHHHHH
I saw that interview, the only thing missing when she said that about the president being given credit was the sound of CRICKETS. She countered JON with a think about "OUR INTERESTS were attacked" USS COLE and what not. TO which he said Madrid and London and blah blah and on and on. What a shill. I guess we will give the PREZ credit for BALI

3. Jon Stewart nailed her on that one and on another one - she said, well
we've been attacked after 1993, the Cole, etc., and Jon said, that was outside of the US, and even after 9/11 the atatcks haven't stopped. Think London, Madrid. She said something like: I am talking about OUR national interests. Jon said: I thought they were our allies!

He owned her.

8. I guess all those soldiers and marines getting blown to hell in Iraq
... don't count as much as the sailors on the USS Cole. :eyes:

4. Remember her saying recent terrorist attacks were not
U.S. interests? That was a very telling moment. So Italy, Great Britian, our allies, are not US interests, to a rightie more concerned about staying in power than reality.

What about all the dead troops, are they U.S. interests?

6. My favorite comment was how you can look people in the eye in
Montana but you can't look people in the eye in NYC. She appeared to speak out of a fear connotation. Now what is noticeably different about people in NYC than people in Montana? Can anyone guess? If you said...diversity...you win!

12. I've been to Montana and I've been to NYC
and I tell you in Montana, you look people in the eye because they are looking at you like you are funny and are suspicious, being from Canada and all, some sort of foreign nation. In New York you look people in the eye because you are having a conversation.

I am generalizing Montana, perhaps unfairly, as I met some wonderful people, but there is a culture of xenophobia and frontierism that exists. It is a very homogenous society, and from what I understand has one of the largest standing militias of any state, certainly per capita as it has a population of only 1 million people.

9. My stomach could not handle watching her. She is cut from the same cloth as Babs...Cold, Heartless,
Evil, Self-serving...and proud of it.
She is a perfect match for a man without a heart.

10. As far as attacked goes
we, Canadian and American (and other NATO allies') forces in Afghanistan and American forces in Iraq have been attacked for the last six years with thousands dead. Soldiers don't count as being attacked by the Taliban, Al Quaeda and Al Quaeda in Iraq? As well as all the innocents who have died who are our responsibilty after we invade their countries.

11. I thought he exercised extraordinary self-control when
She babbled on about how her loving hubby said that most women who were smart were plain, most women who were dumb were pretty, but she was one of those rare ones...

Even we humor-challenged could see how easy it would have been for him to say, "how nice that he was telling you that you were both dumb and plain."

I can only imagine how many directions Jon could have taken, for example, with the horrid sexism of Darth's "compliment".

Instead, the silence of the audience upon hearing this self-aggrandizing story said it all.

13. He was very restrained
and cordial to her and I am guessing it's because she actually appeared on a show where someone like her is in a lions den. I think he took the right approach by not ripping her a new one, as you say, she lobbed him a couple that he could've smacked out of the park if he wanted.

That's Jon for you though, he is a big fan of Lincoln and the way he used to talk with and listen to both sides of the party on a regular basis. It's definitely a policy Jon has adopted on his show and knowing he stands on the left, I think that's a great and open minded quality.

15. agreed. Your comment made me wonder, though,
whether her "handlers" hoped that she would be able to goad Jon into saying something that, taken out of context--without her setup lines--could be made to appear mean. Then they would have a field day attacking him. So they prepped her with all these tempting lines, but he read the situation and decided not to give them any ammunition.

16. Sure--it's a potty-training book--
See Dick. He has to go.

Go. Go. Go.

Go, Dick, go.

Dick has to go to war. Why war, Dick?

Because Halliburton (say it, slowly "retirement in South America--with non-extradition agreement") needs a few no-bid open-ended contracts. (You'll understand when you're older, after a couple of heart attacks and lucky appointments to powerful positions, and after you've made friends with very wealthy people. "Wealthy" is what you would have if your piggy bank was the size of a Hummer stacked full of hundred dollar bills. That's very big! When will you understand? Maybe never if you don't know the right people! And if you have a *conscience*--that's a made-up word sissies use when they don't feel like hurting people for material gain.)

What do you do when you need to go?

You need to get clean afterwards, because you have made a mess. Such a mess! Doesn't everyone see the mess? Not Dick. He doesn't see the mess. The mess is behind him. But he knows how to be clean. How do we clean, Dick?

We need a goddamn (don't use this word in front of your mommy, because it isn't nice) piece of paper.

The Constitution is a piece of paper.

Wipe, Dick, wipe. Then wash your hands. Wash, wash, wash. They might come clean.
