Rep. Regula Joins Growing List of Retiring Republicans
By CQ Staff | 10:45 AM; Oct. 12, 2007
Republican Rep. Ralph Regula, a veteran appropriator and dean of the Ohio delegation in the House, announced Friday that he will retire at the end of this Congress.
He is the 13th House member, and 11th Republican, to announce plans to depart then. (The two Democrats in the group are running for the Senate.) Five senators, all Republicans, also are retiring.
Regula, 82, was first elected in 1972. He has served longer in the House than all but one other Republican — Florida’s C.W. Bill Young, with whom he serves on the powerful Appropriations Committee. Regula, a member of the committee since his second term in Congress, currently is ranking Republican on its Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee.
But despite his seniority, Regula earlier this decade was passed over by GOP leaders for the chairmanship of the full committee — in part because of his relative moderation and willingness to work across party lines, and in part because of his lack of enthusiasm for political fundraising.
