Why do Democrats run for President?

It's certainly not the money (most could make more in the private sector).

So what is it? Power, prestige, and ego certainly all play a role, to a greater or lesser degree.

But more importantly than that, all our nominees are running because they share at a core level basic progressive principles and ideals which the Republicans do not share. It's a profound philosophical difference. They are running because they want to make the world a more peaceful place through international cooperation and diplomacy, not cowboy diplomacy and unilaterism. They are running because they care more about a sick child without health insurance than a tax break for their wealthy friends. They are running because they believe in science more than religion. They are running because they believe Al Gore profoundly deserved the Nobel Peace prize. They are running because they want to level the playing field. They are running because they believe in equal opportunity for all. They are running because they believe in teachers more than tests.

They are running for all these things and more. The Republicans are running for none of these things. They are running for power, priviledge, isolationism, unilaterism, I me me mine, and they are running on fear.

Democrats run on hope.

Remember that the next time you feel tempted to bash one of our nominees. We're all on the same side.
