Brownback To Introduce Apology For Slavery And Segregation
Brownback To Introduce Apology For Slavery And Segregation
By Eric Kleefeld - October 16, 2007, 10:04AM

Sam Brownback has a new initiative he's working on: An official government apology for slavery and segregation.

"They were federal policies," Brownback told the Boston Globe editorial board. "They were wrong. The only way for us to move forward ... is at the end of day acknowledging those, taking ownership for it, and asking for forgiveness."

Brownback said he is working with an as-yet-unnamed Democrat to craft a resolution. In an interesting commentary on just how contentious the Senate is these days, Brownback also said he expects a tough fight in getting such a non-binding resolution passed.

1. Interesting
He's the last person I'd ever expect to see introduce an initiative like this, but then again he is running for President, that's got to be his motive.

7. Won't this enrage his "base"? I don't see it as helpful for his republican pres bid unless
he thinks it will make him look "moderate" and therefore "appealing" to dems or indies.... Something I doubt based on his rejection of evolution.

10. He's trying to peel off that small but not insignificant set of fundy black voters
The ones who AGREE with Brownback about that evolution thing.

Peel them off, and you've got a diverse base that looks very good on TV cheering you on in the background.

9. I despise most of what Brownback stands for, but he's not wrong about everything
The same is true of most politicians.

11. He's after a specific demographic. See post ten.
He'll be able to find a few "generic Asian looking types" to fill out his crowds. But he needs some duskier tones to give his crowds some PEP!

6. How many Senate Man-Hours
will be burned talking about this one?

Worthy people are ALREADY sorry, and those who aren't won't be changed one whit by a Senate resolution.

13. I think a better resolution would read
that the US apologizes for all human rights abuses it has been a part of and pledge to eliminate human rights abuses in the present.

14. If a Democrat introduced this, you'd be cheering.

Brownback has been working for a long time trying to get the US to somehow help the black people who are being victimized in Darfur. I'm not sure if he wants UN peacekeepers sent in or what but I have heard him talk about it on C-SPAN and he seemed very knowledgable about the situation in Darfur, very concerned that nothing was being done.

Perhaps he's actually a decent guy who is seriously concerned about racial inequality. Not all Republicans are greedy corporatists.

resolution?

18. Actually, you're likely to get a LOT of Dem backing on this bill
despite Brownback's name and party affiliation ... remember, a lot of Repuke stuff has been passed with Dem support.

However, a Dem bill even remotely like this ... fodder for the MSM and the RW talking dittoheads to say "Oh, there goes the blame America first crowd again" ... and probably have not one single Repuke vote for it, citing some un-named (and non-existent) "flaw" in the bill, or "rider" attached ...

15. Did they mention his companion resolution?
To reintroduce slavery and segregation, but this time vowing to "do it the right way."

Okay, I don't have any evidence that he's working on such a resolution, but . . .

17. Oh Lord, gotta get those black votes. BUT
it is sickening how these republicans think black voters are dumb. Believe me most of the black voters are smarter than the average voter. They can tell when people are pandering and when they are not.
