Gore warms to another Clinton run
Al Gore is not going to run for president. He is going to endorse Hillary Clinton, instead.

Why?

First, Gore is very close to becoming something rare: a political figure who ends up transcending politics.

He has become an icon of the climate change movement and is widely seen to be acting out of global, not political, concerns.

If he runs for president, that changes instantly. He becomes just another politician grubbing after a job.

Second, Gore is enjoying himself and his new role. It is easy to underestimate this. Do you see the current presidential candidates enjoying themselves? Even a little?

When running for president in 2000, Gore did not enjoy himself and had no reason to. (It is easy to forget just how savage Gore’s press coverage sometimes was.) Does he really want to climb into the meat grinder once again?

Third, there has been a shift in attitude toward a Gore presidential run. In the spring of this year, there was a genuine Gore boomlet, as commentator after commentator speculated on how well Gore could do if he ran for president just one more time.

Now that Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize, you would think support for Gore would be burgeoning into a real groundswell. But it isn’t.

Support for a Gore candidacy has been surprisingly muted, limited to a hardcore “draft Gore” movement and Jimmy Carter.

19. Did you even read the article?
If so can you point me to the part where Gore said anything about supporting Clinton? The only Gore quotes in the whole article are from 2004 and have nothing to do with Hillary.

23. Yes, I did.... It's todays Oct 16, 2007
"Given that, plus the small political consideration that Hillary has reached 50 percent in two national polls (50 percent in a field where there are eight credible candidates is extraordinary), the question for Gore becomes: Why not endorse Hillary?

Especially considering there might be something in it for him and his movement.

"We need a president who cares about global warming and will designate someone who has global appeal to be a roving ambassador on the environment,” the former Gore staffer said. “Two people fit that bill: Hillary Clinton and Al Gore."

26. "There might be something in it for him and his movement"?
What? If he doesn't endorse her, she'll happily let more cities drown, a la Bush? That sounds like a threat to me. Either she thinks global warming is an urgent problem that we should do something about, or she doesn't. It shouldn't depend on whether Gore endorses her.

I am so sick of this "Hillary is inevitable" meme. God forbid anyone would actually get to, you know, vote on the matter of who our nominee is.

29.  Obama pleads for cash to take on Clinton
"Obama's email message to supporters may be seen as a sign time is running out for him to overhaul Clinton's wide lead in opinion polls, and reflected his new, more personal and bruising tone towards the party front-runner.

It came hours after candidates filed their latest quarterly fundraising totals to US authorities, which showed Clinton had nearly 35 million dollars left in her primary campaign kitty, compared to 32 million for Obama.

"The situation here is simple. We are 2.1 million dollars behind. We must close that gap right now. I need you to make a donation of 25 dollars," Obama wrote in the email entitled "Hillary's Money."

Obama's message, less than 90 days before first party nominating contests, painted him as the underdog and a candidate of the people, battling a rival steeped in what the Illinois senator sees as a cynical political system.

as a plain, old US citizen, rather than POTUS?

That makes no sense at all.

What's to enjoy when the world is dying? People such as Gore who live their lives making life better for us all are NOT going to turn their backs on us! Not after all that work! Please... are you serious??

Shift of attitude... why, yes. There has been. MORE PEOPLE WANT GORE TO RUN!!!

Now excuse me while I bookmark this thread so I can remember who started it so I can look for them to eat crow later.

I will send her campaign a donation, because then, obviously, he and General Clark see more in her than I do. I still don't know if I can bring myself to caucus for her, but I will make a donation to her campaign, and try my damndest to open my mind a little more to her. I'm making this pledge to DU right now.

25. Actually, it was New York Magazine's John Heilemann and Elisabeth Bumiller
on the Chris Matthews Show:

http://www.thechrismatthewsshow.com/html/transcript/index.php

This week's BIG QUESTION, if Al Gore does not run for president himself, which
Democrat will he endorse?

Elisabeth?

Ms. BUMILLER: Well, I would--I'm not allowed to predict, but I would--I
wouldn't be surprised if he endorsed Obama and don't forget he endorsed Howard
Dean and don't forget that Dean said afterwards he thought it hurt him.

MATTHEWS: Well, that's nice. You've already been voting here. You did an
absentee ballot a minute ago.

Mr. HEILEMANN: Yeah, but I'll just add to my comment about Obama. But the
reason--the one person he's not going to endorse is Hillary Clinton, who he...

MATTHEWS: Explain that. That's the--that's the sugarplum I want to hear.

Mr. HEILEMANN: Well, I think--yeah, I mean, look, they were--they were--they
were both--they were incredibly intense competitors in the White House for
Clinton's affection, his attention, his time when they were both there. It
was a co-vice presidency. That annoyed the heck out of Al Gore. And then in
2000, one of the great complaints they had was that--was that she sucked a lot
of attention and energy and money away from him in the 2000 campaign. The
problem wasn't just Bill Clinton's infidelities distracting from Al Gore's
campaign, in their view, but Hillary Clinton continuing the picture of the
Clintons in American politics. This is their view, by the way.

MATTHEWS: Whoa.

Mr. HEILEMANN: It annoys him to no end. And I could never see it happening.

MATTHEWS: I love this stuff.

Anyway, Anne:

Ms. KORNBLUT: I'm going to set myself up to be wrong here, but I think
there's a good change he wouldn't endorse at all. Having just won the Nobel,
he's kind of risen above it. He's become an elder statesman all the time. He
saw what happened in 2004 where it didn't matter in the end.

MATTHEWS: Yeah.

Ms. KORNBLUT: That's what I would do if I were him.

MATTHEWS: David, what do you expect from Gore?

Mr. YEPSEN: I agree with Anne. I don't think Al Gore will endorse. He
understands he can't deliver anything to anybody, particularly in my state of
Iowa. And I think it can only hurt him. Just simply raises expectations for
somebody. And finally, if he endorses, he makes somebody mad. He wants to
keep his own options open for some day in the future.

MATTHEWS: Wow. Anyway, thanks for a great roundtable. Elisabeth Bumiller,
John Heilemann, Anne Kornblut and David Yepsen.

I can't believe how much schlock her machine is churning out about how Gore will not run, or there is no interest in a Gore run, or People are satisfied with the field of candidates, or now this about him supporting her.

They know they are doomed once Gore enters the race.

To Hell with Hill,

We need a real leader.
