He was comparing the current political environment to that in Harry Truman's last year, during an unpopular war.

He also said he thinks lots of troops will start coming home in the Spring, and the war will not be so much of a handicap for Republicans.

the war will be an issue, but I agree that it may be largely settled, direction-wise, by next summer. It may not be that big of a "what to do about it" issue in November next year, but the statements and positions on the war that the candidates espouse now will have a future impact in terms of voters' assessing their judgment and likelihood of further military action--THAT is where Dems will still have an edge.
