I thought it might be fun if we could put some faces on some names. Please upload yours.

I'll start. Below are a couple pics of me in Washington, DC from this past March. My father, who's 71, and I took the trip together. He hadn't been to our nation's capital in forty years. Watching him take it all in was a treasure i'll never forget.

Hopefully, this thread can remain in GD-P as many of the regulars may not frequent the Lounge. If it needs to be moved...I understand.

I haven't been to Spain since the 1970s. I was born and raised in New Mexico, and Spain felt so much like home. It is a beautiful country with friendly people. The only other country I've been where the people were even more friendly was Mexico. I haven't been to Puerto Rico before, but it seems to me that anywhere the Spanish mixed with the locals is a lot like home to me. My husband was stationed in Guam during the Vietnam War. He said it felt like Guam was very similar to New Mexico too and he felt so at home there.

A few years ago, the Art League of Houston wanted to build new a studio and classroom space as the two old houses they used weren't big enough or good enough or whatever. So, with about two months before demolition, they asked two of their artists (can't remember their names now) to do something with the houses however they wanted. Thus, with the help of power saws and other tools, these two made "The Vortex":




I've also been through a couple of hurricanes and plenty of tropical storms and depressions (the depressions are the worst for us as they often cause the most flooding) having lived in and around Houston all my life ;)

The woman under the tree is my "past-wife" (as in "ex" not "dead") lol!

It was also one of those kinds of "art installations" that may very well have caused more than a few accidents! It's on the main drag of Montrose Blvd, near Westheimer (if you want to look it up on google-maps) and quite a busy thoroughfare. I know I braked suddenly when I saw it the first time lol More rubbernecking than your average freeway accident ("Oooo, flashing lights!") around here ;)

meditation and puts his thoughts down on tape or something.
I haven't recorded solo in 30 years--closet I came was to do
some cameo on The Freedom Toast albums, and the Holland-America
Line acoustic folk project of the 1980s--another era entirely.

Some day, if I live that long! In the meantime, keep it up!

Back when I had time, and could disappear unnoticed by my superiors,
I used to give concerts and play festivals in Europe as a Leo Kottke
clone, made friends with his luthier (Božo Podunavac), and had Božo
make more guitars for me than I should have been able to afford. Božo
called me a week or so ago in Germany (!) to tell me he would be 80 on
his next birthday (we have known each other for exactly 30 years now--scary).
here are the last 2 I had him make for me:

Božo has been making guitars since the late sixties, and never figured out that
as one of the best 12 string guitar builders in the world, he had a right to make
money off his craft. He finally got it after his third or fourth retirement. When
I first met him in the late seventies, he used to custom make these absolutely
unbelievable instruments from scratch, charging something like $2600 for them, taking
nine months to build one, and spending $2200 on the materials, and never figuring out
why he was always broke.

After repeated retirements, when people just kept throwing money at him to build "one more,"
he finally got it. He used to call me up and gush in amazement that someone had just offered
him $20,000 or $25,000 to build a guitar. I couldn't get through to him that Martin was
charging $35,000 for some of their instruments that weren't even the top of the line, and
so he didn't need to be ashamed. His inlay work is pure artistry in itself, and he could
have made a great living just doing that on other people's instruments.

There should be some kind of material on him on the web. With a name like Podunavac, it's
not like you're going to have to sort through a hundred different Maine city councilmen, dog
catchers in Scotland, and professors at Montana State. Božo is a wonderful guy, but fair
warning if you ever call him on the phone: after 50 years in the USA, his English still SUCKS!
I have to use my twenty words of Serbian to even understand half of what he is going on about.

Although they gave an incorrect pronunciation for his name,
which is pronounced "po-doo-NAH-vats."

Unfortunately, yes he has finally figured out that at the tender young
age of 80, he is allowed to charge more than slave wages for his artistry.
After the last two he made for me (the pic), I have also retired from the
ranks of guitar accumulators, and as it is, the few performances I still do,
I do with ones that I dare travel with, which are precious few. When recording,
although I do use his guitars, I also have a matching pair (one here, one back in
America) of mid-sixties Guild 212-XL guitars that microphones seem to fall in
love with.

However, if you are ever in the Rheinland area of Germany, the outer Cape
Cod area in August, or Charleston, SC at New Year's, let me know, and you can
try one of mine out to your heart's content (if it's Charleston, you can join
Howard Dean, who is also a picker and has tried his hand at Leo Kottke pieces
on one my axes--even if not, nice to know Howard is one of us, right?).

As my two girls do not play, if my cardiac woes return, or if something worse
crops up (both parents had cancer), I'll leave both you and Howard one in my
will--at least I'll be sure they go to people who appreciate them!

morning. At these New Year's things, I come over to America the day

Two years ago, at 1 AM, I found myself in a room jamming and singing
Russian songs with one of my musical heroes, Theodore Bikel, who was
already over 80 years old (and still sings like he is half that).
This amazing session was witnessed by my wife and two Charleston
janitors who hadn't the slighest clue what was going on, or who they
were hearing, but they knew it sounded special and said so. I would
give my left foot to have a tape of that hour, but it was just one of
those events that will have to live on in my memory.

236. Not to fill up this thread with guitar lore, but....

Yes, that is one of them, and it has quite a history to it.
It is the only used Božo I have. Some idiot had Božo make him
a guitar back in 1994 and didn't want to pay the extra money for
all the fancy inlay that Božo usually puts on for a few per cent
more. Fair enough on that score, but he then didn't play it much,
stored it improperly, and left it for long periods of time with
a cheap strap on top of it. The strap stained the front, although
the amazing sound was unimpaired. A dealer in Oregon put it up on
the internet while I was in the States. I was in Cape Cod, and had
no idea, but a radio host in Provincetown, MA, with whom I did shows
when I was there, saw it (he played 12 string, too) and told me about it.
At this point, a new (i.e. made to order from Božo) 12 string would have
cost $9000 or so, and this was available for $3000.

So, I ordered it, and went nuts when I saw the defects. I called Božo up

slight warping in stride and fixed that, but took the staining as a personal
affront! To his dismay, it had penetrated the wood, and could not be removed.
Since then, it has been nastily manhandled by several airlines, and
repaired by both Fran Ledoux in Massachusetts and Bill Hatcher in Atlanta.
Airlines have been SO rough with guitars lately, this is the only Božo I dare
travel with these days, except by land, and that is not often. In form
and neck length, it is the only "duplicate" Božo I have, so while the loss
of any of them would be a tragedy, this would not leave a gaping hole in my
musical menagerie if Smashemup Airlines' baggage handlers are in a particularly
bad mood on the day I happen to be traveling.

There was a guy named Mark Leaf who used to make near-indestructible guitars cases
to order, and I had him make a case for the one Božo (luckily) that has the same form
as this one. This was in 1979. I have been trying to locate Mark Leaf (last seen in
Kansas) for years to make me another one. For all I know he retired long ago, but I
have no clue. If there are any guitar nuts out there who know for sure, please let me
know and put me out of my misery one way or another. For those who never heard of Mark
Leaf: when Jim Croce died in that plane crash, he supposedly had his guitar with him,
and it was in a Mark Leaf case. The guitar survived intact (Croce did not).

226. Actually, MOST of my Božo guitars have that look

It's just that I've had him make different ones for me over the
years, some of them one-of-a-kinds, like the extra long neck cutaway
12 string (for low-tuned slide guitar, and low-tuned pieces in
general), and the only mahogany 12 string cutaway he ever made).
I just wanted different sounds for each instrument. Those last two are
of somewhat lighter construction than the others, having a somewhat
sweeter and brighter tone. I don't use them for performing at all,
although they would be perfect studio guitars, or good with built-in
pick-ups, which I cannot bring myself to install (purist at heart).

Božo would still build your son an instrument if he threw enough money
at him. Much of the wood that Božo used to use is now on the forbidden
list of imports, as some of the wood he used was from trees that are now
on the endangered list. If you can find a used Božo--very rare, but they
do show up every now and then, I'm told)--try for one built before 1995,
and it will be one with the old-style heavy rosewood construction, and
that unmistakable deep ringing resonance that distinguishes Božo's
instruments from all others. I promise you that if he gets his hands on
one, your son's going apeshit will have been every bit justified!
