4. I Trust The Dems Are Smart Enough To Finesse The Issue
I also think the Pugs will overplay their hand...

Plus Rudi and McCain have been pro-immigration in the past...

But immigration will be their wedge issue...

3. All of the above.
But immigration looks like the big one, because they have used it to uphold Bush's veto of health care for kids. This country is becoming an ugly place, thanks to the extremist Bushites.

5. You omitted several wedge issues. IMO all of them will be used. There efficacy will depend on the
district or state.

7. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one. I believe the list at On The Issues is fairly exhaustive.

ON EDIT ADD
OnTheIssues.org

Abortion
Budget & Economy
Civil Rights
Corporations
Crime
Drugs
Education
Energy & Oil
Environment
Families & Children
Foreign Policy
Free Trade Government Reform
Gun Control
Health Care
Homeland Security
Immigration
Infrastructure & Technology
Jobs
Principles & Values
Social Security
Tax Reform
War & Peace
Welfare & Poverty

The disappointing thing is the list includes "Civil Rights" and "Gun Control" even though the right to keep and bear arms, i.e. gun control, is a civil right under U.S. law.

9. How the GOP could win the election in 2008.
Sure, they will push all the wedge issues, particularly one like immigration which seems to have legs this year. However, the GOP will not win the election just based on wedge issues. They can win the election by fracturing the anti-GOP forces. How? IRAN!

Here is the scenario:

1. Bush bombs Iran in the Fall of 2008 under the pretext of protecting our troops in Iraq.

2. The Democratic nominee throws her support to Bush's bombing of Iran, particularly since she voted for Kyl-Lieberman.

3. The antiwar movement and independents concerned about another war break with the Democratic nominee.

4. The pro-GOP forces are united on Election Day while everyone else is pointing fingers at one another.

5. Gas shoots to $5 a gallon (or higher) because of the Strait of Hormuz being impassable due to war.

One way to prevent such an scenario is by nominating a candidate that did not support Kyl-Lieberman.
