I am going to vote for an openly gay Senate candidate for Jesse Helms' old seat |
|
Color me amazed. I remember back in late 1995 I attended a wedding of a close friend. He had gone to college with a person who was then living in NC and I begged this guy to be allowed to vote against Jesse on his ballot. Sadly, he decided voter fraud was a bad idea so I never did get the chance to vote against Jesse. Little did I know I would later wind up in NC myself.
So here it is 12 years later and I am voting for an openly gay man to fill that very seat. Wow, just wow. I harbor no illusions about him having an easy time of it. But the first poll I saw was Dole 47 Neal 34. This is with the only thing people knowing about Neal is that he is openly gay. Dole isn't above 50 with a virtually unknown opponent.
I would literally pay huge money to see the reaction on Helms' face to being replaced by a gay man. It would come close to making up for those two close losses to Harvey Gantt. Close but not quite. A gay man replacing Jesse Helms. Time for some new lyrics for the Ironic song.

1. It's almost worth moving back there just to vote for him |
|
because I, too, would love to see the expression on that fat bigot's face if he's replaced by a gay man. It was humiliating enough for him to be replaced by a bit o' fluff like Dole.
I'm not surprised Dole's polling badly. She's fucked up everything she's touched in her whole career.

3. This is a two edged sword |

we already had one person reevaluate her decision not to run. I think Democrats here may well not let him stand as the nominee. I could live with that if the person they put in had a great chance to win.

Loosing the Gantt election was one of the saddest times in my life. I realized for the first time that large groups of people lie, steal, cheat and do anything to win. I still have my Gantt pins & signs. I will do anything to see Dole out of here...

I have not met Neal yet but look forward to it.
I am actually surprised I have not yet received a donation request.
Please send me a PM if you get notice of a meet and greet.

I need to wrap my arms around a campaign and do some volunteer work. Since NC is irrelevant in the Presidential primary I am please to have this race (and issue so dear to my heart) to get involved with.

NC is irrelevent to the primary. I live in Jones' district so no good Congressional race. This race is exactly what I need.

9. What's wrong with gay people, I don't understand |
|
I went to school with a boy that was gay. I played games with him after school. I worked with him in a federal job. He went roller skating with us. He went dancing with us. He was as normal to us as apple pie and I really liked him. I liked him because he was a real person. And that's a fact.

10. I am not a very old man, but I am old enough to remember |
|
a time when the things we take for granted now were considered unspeakable.
I remember the first time I met an openly gay person. I was about 14, so it was about 1973. I was at my family's rented summer home (in a bungalow colony) and I had gone to his house to see if he had yet come up to his family's summer home.
He had, but he was out with some of his freinds. Later in the day, I was walking down the road when a car passed me, stopped short, and reversed itself. My freind was inside and I leaned into the window and we started to talk. We were both excited to see each other
As we were talking, I noticed that two of his male friends in the car were holding hands and being quite affectionate. I guess he must have noticed because he said something like "Don't mind them; they're just boyfriends". I guess I that didn't do much for my quizzical expression, so he added "cuke, I'm gay too"
The odd things was, I wasn't shocked that he was gay. I kind of realized that when he offered to jack me off the previous summer. I was shocked that he would actually say that. Didn't he know that you're not supposed to be proud of that?
I'll never forget how I lost a good friend because I could not fathom why he would want to be honest about himself.
