Obama reaches out to Hispanic voters in Iowa.
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 04:26 PM by phen43
By most accounts, Hispanic leaders here say that among the Democrats the Obama campaign has been the most aggressive in reaching out to them.

“We are reaching out to nontraditional people,” said Joan Kato, head of Hispanic outreach for the Obama campaign. “We can’t expect the voters to come to us, so we are going to them and showing up at events to build trust.”

The Obama campaign has sent Ms. Kato and her crew to over 50 Latino events in the state, is lining up Spanish-speaking supporters to work on caucus night, has printed literature in Spanish and English explaining the caucus process and has a Latino steering committee in every region of the state.

“We’ve been heavily courted by Obama,” said Dawn Martinez Oropeza, an activist with the Iowa Allies for Immigration Reform. “Obama has been the only one there right from the beginning — we’ve gotten V.I.P. tickets to events, he’s been on conference calls with Latino leaders and they’ve always had booths at Latino events. He’s tried to make a more personal connection with the community. From the others, we’ve gotten no invitations to anything.”

8. I don't think O's reaching out to Hispanics
is much cause for celebration if you belong to a group that has just been shown how unimportant it is to Obama.

Clinton pushes for powerful US Latino vote
Oct 5, 2007

WASHINGTON (AFP) — She doesn't try to speak Spanish but she still gets the cheers she seeks: Hillary Clinton is busily courting Hispanic Americans, whose political muscle could help put her in the White House.

Since launching her campaign, the New York senator and wife of ex-president Bill Clinton has methodically targetted Latino voters for support, not missing any large meeting of members of the nearly 50 million-strong Hispanic population, the biggest and fastest-growing US minority.

She has gone out of her way to appear on Spanish-language television, taken part in a debate on the massive Univision network and met Latino lawmakers.

And when they can, her staff chows down in Mexican food places, hoping to bolster Latino-friendly impressions of Clinton's campaign.

And it is paying off: the endorsements from the Hispanic community, wary over the national backlash against illegal immigration, are piling in.

Most recently she garnered the support of Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, the country' second-largest city and where about half of the inhabitants have Hispanic origins.

24. It is well known..
that Hillary, herself a former hispanic, is of the mind that unhappy hispanics can place their heart with god, and through his power help to make them ex-hispanics as well. She loves the sinner......

2. I imagine she's busy
not hiring self-hating "ex-gay" gospel singers to deliver 1/2 sermons on hating homosexuals at officially sanctioned campaign events to pander to South Carolina bigots.

Signed,

4. This place has turned really nasty.
Seems not a single thread with Obama in the subject line can remain free from Mcclurkin-related rants, even if they have absoutely nothing to do with the subject matter of the thread. Keep the faith. :toast:

11. Yeah, gays shouldn't have lives of their own
Gays are nothing but soundbites, and objecting to a nasty hatemonger saying bigoted things about them are just mud slinging and throwing a pity party, right? :eyes:

And you have been corrected on it. Seems you missed that, eh?

13. Amazing that you post a good article about Obamas outreach
to the Hispanic community as a slam against Hillary. Was it not worth posting as a plus for Obama, without slamming another Dem?
