Cate Edwards: on the Trail for Dad

http://apnews.excite.com/article/20071111/D8SRNNCG0.html

By MIKE BAKER

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Hanging out with new pals at a buzzing Manchester tap room, Cate Edwards sounded like any other college student cracking wise over a beer.

Among the topics for debate: of Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" interviews, which wins the award for most awkward? By consensus, they picked last month's appearance by Vice President Dick Cheney's wife, Lynne.

Cate Edwards, daughter of Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., talks during an interview with the Associated Press at the Edwards for President Office in Manchester, N.H., Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007. "I think it helps to have a young person talk about the issues in a way that's relatable," Edwards said. "I feel more comfortable talking to them, and I think they feel more comfortable talking to me, because I'm not that well polished and because I'm just a regular 25-year-old." It's a typical night at the barroom, and no place for a presidential stump speech. And that suits the daughter of Democratic White House hopeful John Edwards just fine.

"I think it helps to have a young person talk about the issues in a way that's relatable," Cate Edwards said. "I feel more comfortable talking to them, and I think they feel more comfortable talking to me, because I'm not that well polished and because I'm just a regular 25-year-old."

On her first solo campaign trip through New Hampshire, Edwards tooled around the Granite State on Friday and Saturday in a minivan packed with campaign staff, making the case for her father in the most casual of ways. Her language when discussing policy wasn't always as pristine as that of a candidate. She usually referred to Edwards as "my dad," except when joking that he's "a hick."

A second-year Harvard Law School student, Cate Edwards also didn't hesitate to point out that she and her father disagree on some issues. Some are serious, such as gay marriage. Others, such as whether he should dance in public, not so much.

2. Can't Edwards run on his own merits? Why does he need his daughter to help him?
:sarcasm:

(That's what the HH's say when Big Dawg campaigns)

9. That's so sad to see, I'm sure
he would have lived up to his promise as a young man. I don't know how John and Elizabeth have weathered that, but I do know that they have the strength and courage of conviction to do what they are doing now, in a way, for Wade.

13. It certainly is a peek into the heart and soul of the Edwards....
Did you ever see the open letter Elizabeth wrote on behalf of Cindy Sheehan?

"Listen to Cindy" (grab the hanky box)

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/2003-11-19-edwards-son_x.htm

In an interview with USA TODAY, Edwards, 50, and his wife, Elizabeth, 54, talked this week about how and why their son Wade came to be such a pivotal presence in Four Trials. He was so intertwined with two of the cases that "the book wouldn't have been complete without him," Edwards says as his campaign bus goes from Sioux City to Onawa.

Edwards has agreed to talk about Wade to the news media once, with USA TODAY, but his wife does most of the talking.

He sticks to matter-of-fact statements and steers clear of memories and emotions, lest they overwhelm him. But in the book — at times with Elizabeth's help — he writes movingly of his relationship with his son and his response to his death.

The two were constant companions. They climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together when Wade was 15. They discussed Edwards maybe going into politics. Wade took his proud parents to Washington on a trip he won in an essay contest. He worked at his father's law office and told friends he hoped one day to practice with him.

12. That trip to Washington....they met with the First Lady
Hillary Clinton. The link I provided with his photo provides more detail of that meeting, which was certainly a highlight of young Edwards life :) I wonder if she knows that....I know First Ladies are busy.
