Poll question: How many of you have/had family members who were bigoted
and were good, moral, decent people in all other respects?

1. The difference between this and Obama's statement is that word "other. "

7. There is good and bad in everyone.
Understanding comes only through dialogue and open hearts.

3. You know you can vote in your own poll, right?
In fact, I find it a bit unsettling if the person who post the poll does NOT vote first in a poll they post.

And my dad, her son, was just the opposite.

6. My crazy aunt used to tell racist jokes at the dinner table. My mom told her to knock it off.
Yay mom.

11. I have had family members who were bigoted,
who were not "moral, decent people."

My father, who I was estranged from for all but 3 months of my youth, was a racist. I got sent to stay with him for a few months when I was 15. He would not let me walk down the street to school because "the niggers might get me." :eyes:

For the record, no person of color in that high school ever even looked sideways at me. Neither did anyone else. I did my time, finished the school year, and caught a plane back home.

His racism extended to his favorite joke: waiting for them to issue tags and open "nigger season."

He was also a sexist. With 3 girls and one boy in the house, the girls cooked, set the table, and did the dishes. Every night. Not only did the boy not lift a finger, we were required to stop doing the dinner dishes to serve him ice cream if he called for it.

My father, my stepmother, and my step sisters and brothers. Not moral, not decent.

I am so thankful that they did not have the raising of me.

12. MY brother is the worst sexist there is
he voted republican rather than vote for a woman. And he says he is going to vote for someone who runs against Hillary.

which boggled my mind when contrasted with her racist language. My father used the usual racist words at home; he had no use for people of color and thought any display of affection between the races was disgusting, and if he saw it on TV, he make noises about it. Hell! Anyone who wasn't "a nice Irish boy" wasn't approved of as a date for me, and frowned on as a friend.

Blew his mind when I started listening to Ray Charles early on and later, James Brown.
What he thought when I went through a brief phase in college wearing a dashiki I don't know.

These days, I have one BIL who uses the "N-word" but gets a punch in the arm from me every single time he uses it, and a nephew who has quieter but still obvious racist tendencies. Him I can't punch, but I try not to spend much time with him, either.

Family...whatcha gonna do? You didn't pick 'em.

14. My Grandmother Had A Regular Mental Block
How can you be an openhearted angel and a bigot, too? Well, she was, but grandmother had less than no regard for blacks. She thought they were dirty, vile, ignorant people and deserved their (then) lesser place in life. Which is amazing, considering her own mother was just the opposite; A real pepperpot with many close and loyal black friends.

15. My dad's father didn't think much of blacks
of course, "it wasn't their fault, it was just natural". He was a pretty decent, if somewhat odd, guy in general, though.

My mom's father, shortly after my ex and I seperated, wanted to know when we were going to 'whack her'.

<blink>

When we made it abundantly clear we weren't "whacking" anybody, he said you could get "a couple of PRs to do it for hot dogs".

:wow:

EVERY head in the room (about 12 total) swivled simultaniously to look at my mother, the oldest child, to let her know SHE had to field this one!

And yes, he's a crotchety old fart...
