Poll question: Which candidate will have the most volunteers in Iowa? (Corrected) |
|
For the purposes of this poll question, assume the following:
1. Volunteers are counted on Monday, January 19th, the day of the Iowa Caucuses.
2. A volunteer is someone who spends at least one hour of time that day working for a specific campaign. (Simply attending the caucus or working for the Democratic Party as a neutral agent doesn't count.)
3. Volunteers who are out-of-state and making phone calls to Iowa do count.
4. Paid staff does not count.
5. Volunteers may be from out-of-state or in-state, as long as they are in Iowa or making phone calls to Iowa.

Heh. :)
I am off to Iowa on Friday, I won't be there on the 19th, but I have a clue about who will have the most volunteers...
Cell phones schmell phones. Dean's ready.

4. Gep still maintains a lot of grass roots Iowa support |
|
I only offer anecdotal evidence of having been there this past weekend and seeing numerous yard signs - much more than any other candidates. Of course, I was in a largely union town (saw a bumper sticker - "Hell Yes!{/i] I'd fight for my union". A big buzz still on for Gep, too - many I talked to liked him and a woman I knew is volunteering for him. That said, Dean is coming to town this week and they are looking forward to that.

5. the most democrats? or the the most dems+Bush supporters |
|
if it's the former it might be Dean or Gephardt or Kerry by a slim margin, if it's the latter it's definetly Dean

from an ex-Dean supporter here in MN that they were having a hard time getting 5,000 volunteers to go to Iowa from their MeetUp lists. Of course that was a couple of weeks ago so things may be different now.
Phone calls and letters are fine, but face-to-face VOLUNTEERS are what works in caucus states. DK will suprise many of the conventional-wisdom watchers with a very strong showing, especially in the northern part of the state. He has received lots of positive press in the Des Moines Register of late, without a hint of any condescension. People in Iowa are no-nonsense and can smell BS from a mile away.
It's gonna be an interesting caucus...

Ah, the friend-of-a-friend-of-an-ex-campaign-worker-who- knows-Howard-Dean's-illegitimate-brother-in-law sort of anecdote. That's conclusive!
