Poll Has Kerry Leading Big in NY
Still, hopeful signs for rival Edwards
Washington - Front-runner John Kerry holds a commanding lead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination among likely New York voters, but almost half of that support is soft, offering trailing rival John Edwards a potential opening, pollsters said Friday.
A Marist College Institute for Public Opinion poll released Friday gave Kerry 66 percent of the likely vote in New York, which will bestow a delegate trove on March 2 along with nine other states that join the nominating contest for "Super Tuesday."
But 27 percent of all likely New York voters ranked their support as "somewhat" strong and another 22 percent said they might change their mind on election day. Kerry got slightly more firmly committed support among his core backers: 52 percent of that group said they were firmly committed, compared with 50 percent of all New York voters. About one in 10 voters remains undecided, the poll found.
"Some of this
can peel away. The question is how much and how fast? The nature of his support is not rock-solid," said Lee Miringoff, Marist poll director, of Kerry's support. Still, Miringoff said the challenge confronting Edwards, the North Carolina senator, is how to engage enough voters in one of the costliest media markets in the country.
