Specter files federal election complaint over TV ad
WASHINGTON - Sen. Arlen Specter filed a federal election law complaint Friday against a conservative tax watchdog group that he said improperly aired a TV ad in Pennsylvania to help his Republican primary opponent.
The group's president said the ad was "well within the limits of the law" and countered that Specter is "having a bout of mad Dean disease."
At issue is a 30-second TV ad by the Washington-based Club For Growth comparing Specter to Democratic front-runner John Kerry. It cost $150,000 for its weeklong statewide cable run that ended Thursday.
"Fact is, nearly 70 percent of the time Specter and Kerry voted the same way" in the Senate, an announcer says in the ad. "And that makes Arlen Specter 100 percent too liberal."
