questions about donating money to candidates |
|
i have a question about some rules concerning donations to candidates. i know there is a 2000 dollar limit , but does this apply only to a specific party or overall ? by this i mean, if you donated 2000 in total to 1 or more democratic party candidates, can you still donate to candidates of another party ? or does 2000 dollars limit include all party candidates in the primary ?
also, i assume the donation limits start all over again in the general election, meaning even if you gave 2000 in the primary, you can give up to 2000 again in the general election.

During the primary season, you can give $2,000 to each candidate if you so chose (in other words $2,000 to Kucinich plus $2,000 to Clark, etc.)
After the Democratic convention in July 2004, the campaign will be based on federal funds. You can't give directly to a campaign after the convention (with small exceptions).
I plan to give $2,000 to whichever candidate is leading in mid-March 2004.

My understanding is the same as Eric J's, but one can write a $2,000 check earmarked for the primary, and another $2,000 check earmarked for the general election before the convention. The limit is $2,000 per candidate per election and the primary and general are considered seperate elections for such purposes.
