http://www.news-press.com/news/local_state/040221parker.htmlWhile Florida’s U.S. Sen. Bob Graham said this week he’d serve as vice president if asked, speculation swirled around Florida’s other Democratic U.S. senator, Bill Nelson.
Elected to the Senate in 2000 after holding other statewide offices, Nelson’s a proven winner with experience in the nation’s space program.
And Florida, with its 27 electoral votes, is seen as “ground zero” for November’s presidential election, with candidates scrambling for every vote.
As several Web sites and national papers point out, a Floridian — including Nelson, specifically — couldn’t hurt the Democratic ticket.
A National Journal “Democratic Insiders’ Poll” on who John Kerry would pick as a running mate listed Graham fourth of five contenders, with 65 votes (John Edwards was tops with 207).
Nelson, with 14, was in a larger pool of “also receiving votes.”
But Nelson himself put a quietus on the prospect Friday.
He said he has not had any contact with any candidate, nor any candidate’s representative, about serving as vice president.
