TEACHERS SPLIT SUPPORT — Not long after Iowa State Education Association President Linda Nelson announced she is backing Barack Obama, a dozen teachers who serve in leadership roles at ISEA were rolled out by the John Edwards campaign as supporters Wednesday.

Nelson, a fourth-grade teacher from Council Bluffs, called Obama “an honest person” and predicted he will win the Iowa caucuses and go on to become the party’s nominee.

“He’s straightforward with us. He’s willing to work with us, and he demonstrates the kind of leadership that American needs,” Nelson said.

In a statement, Edwards said he was proud to win the support of the teachers Wednesday.

“I look forward to working with them to make sure all children get a great education and the chance to succeed,” Edwards said. “When I am president, we are going to treat teachers, support professionals and all educators with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

All of the ISEA members and leaders endorsing candidates are doing so on their own and not on behalf of ISEA, the state’s largest teacher association.

DES MOINES, IA – Iowans for Hillary today unveiled 38 members of Hillary Clinton’s Iowa Education Leadership Council and Apple Corps, a team of 167 Iowa education leaders who will support Hillary Clinton in the Iowa Caucuses because of her hard work and experience working to improve our education system. Apple Corps will conduct outreach to Iowa’s educators on behalf of the Senator to increase their participation in the caucuses for Hillary Clinton.
