Andrew Sullivan predicted that Bush will endorse civil unions |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 11:54 AM by DaisyUCSB
Wishful thinking on his part?
What's his track record on predictions?
This was on the Chris Matthews show. He said that it will alienate the religious right but he will do it

1. I think the gay marriage issue |
|
is trickier for Bush than Kerry
Democrats will accept civil unions. Fundies will not. And Bush believes his father lost to Clinton partly because the fundies stayed home on election day.

6. Yep. There is no way Bush can do this and keep his base |
|
he's fucked. And surprisingly, it does look like Bush has a finer line to tread than Kerry. I am encouraged to hear this.

Sullivan is just trying to rationalize his support for Bush. He is completely blind to Bush's radical right agenda.

7. He is a bit restless though, |
|
and may well bail on Bush. He is bothered by the vicious social agenda of the republican party. He is also concerned by the alarming budget deficits. But the primary reason he seems to be pro-Bush is that (since 9/11) he is very pro-war.
Sullivan is occasionally worth reading. Few writers are more eloquent concerning gay marriage and related issues.

this whole constitutional amendment will backfire on shrub with moderates. While many moderates may be against gay marraige or civil unions, a consitutional amendment makes smirk look mean spirited. It seems harsh, petty and overtly political to seek a constutional amendment to discriminate against a segment of our society who live their lives in every way the same as the rest of us. Save for whom they choose to love.
While one's conscious may tell it that gay marriage is a sin, that same conscious should tell it that a constitutional amendment sanctioning discrimination is just as wrong.

4. bush is for not stopping civil unions |
|
sorta.
If he comes out and says civil unions are wrong and sinnful he'll be tombstoned. Let's hope the fundies draft Roy Moore or stay home.

5. Not unless he wins in 2004. |
|
And his term is safe, God forbid. I could see him doing it for political reasons, bucking the far right.
The religious right will do what it's told. It'll scream bloody murder, but the GOP is its party.

8. I don't think the fundies will vote Dem |
|
but if some of them stay home, Bush is in trouble. That is part of what caused his father's defeat according to the GOP.

He can't. He'll lose the fundies - and they're already pissed about SCOTUS and the sodomy laws. He needs the fundies - he can't win without them.
Nothing says self hatred more than a gay Republican.
