My friend just said she'd vote for Nader |
|
now this doesn't really bother me since she lives in upstate New York. What does annoy me is she honestly has no reason to vote for him. She knows nothing about him, or his stances. She's only turning 18 right before the election. The only thing she knows is she really hates Bush but she won't vote for a Democrat because she's pro-life. And apparentely she doesn't care that Nader is pro-choice.
While it may not matter in this case, how can we lure these types over?

Slam her over and over how she has to be ABB or she's really voting for Bush.
Maybe tell her how she's directly responsible for over 500 American deaths if she decides to vote for Nader which is really a vote for Bush.
Call her a traitor two ofr three times each day.
You know, the standard DU methodologies.

How about pro young soldier life? How about infant mortality? How about state sanctioned murder? How about all the lives that are lost to poor healthcare.
Everyone loves a baby but if one is really pro-life, there are many bigger issues that many/most pro-lifers turn their backs on or even support.

which means pro-life for the hungry, the poor and the innocents in war-torn countries but respectful of choice because there's no sense being pro-life just for fetuses if you don't have the programs in place to care for the children & many mothers have no real choice until then. Oh and tell her Nader likes him and toured with him.

She is being stupid but look at it this way, most 18 year olds don't even vote so this is no big deal to the bottom line this election. On top of that, I'd rather her vote go to Nader because she's pissed at Bush rather than her vote going to Bush because Kerry is pro-choice.

|
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 10:37 PM by HypnoToad
NOT!
Let me try to understand her point of view:
She hates Bush. (no drugs needed for that.)
She won't vote for a Dem because she is pro-life and has heard that the Dem party is typically pro-choice. (so choose life and stay out of government interfering with other peoples' lives, it's that simple. This is America, not the Soviet Union...)
She wants to vote for Nader because she knows nothing of him and somehow thinks he must be pro-life even though we know he's pro-choice?! (she's naturally thoughtless or is on something because something so significant simply can't be decided by playing guesswork, without researching...)
Here is, in all seriousnss, what should be done IMHO: Tell her to look at ALL of the issues and let her make an educated choice after learning about everyone involved. Let her decide after the primary as she probably can't vote in that... But don't let one sole issue sway her that much. No one issue is that important unless it affects the majority of us (e.g. jobs that pay liveable wages); it's looking at all the issues and seeing which ones are best for both us as individuals and us as a whole country/society.
Back to fun-time commentary: I can't even begin to think of a way to say anything else with tact by now, so I'm just going to say it, for the sake of debate:
As it stands, assuming what you've said it accurate, she's totally bonkers. Forgive me for my bluntless but what you said is a true jaw-dropper. It makes no sense nor logic.
She's a good reason why the voting age should be raised. If you're old enough to seriously look at the candidates, then you're old enough to vote. If you're of mandated legal age and vote despite not looking at anyone's ideologies or track records or basing a vote on a glib generalization (e.g. "pro life"), you're a nutter and shouldn't be given the option to vote. and 18? Parties, music/media, and fashion seem to be more important to people at that age, of either sex. Gotta be in, gotta be cool. Since when has coolness mingled with politics, unless it's blind anti-establishment?
