Utah Democrats Favor John Kerry |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 02:03 AM by Feanorcurufinwe
Utah Democrats may be the minority but they don't want to be counted out. That's why--in spite of growing national support for Presidential hopeful John Kerry--the state party wants Utah Democrats to have a voice, too.
Donald Dunn/Democratic State Chair: "WELL THERE ARE MORE THAN TWO CANDIDATES RUNNING, AND THE DEMOCRATS DO HAVE A VOICE. AND WE'RE INVITING ALL UTAHNS TO PARTICIPATE. SO WHETHER YOU'RE DEMOCRAT, REPOUBLICAN OR INDEPENDENT, THIS PRIMARY IS GOING TO MATTER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE."
<snip>
Even though John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich and others are still in the race, John Kerry is galvanizing a lot of Democrats already.
Joe Hatch/John Kerry Campaign, Utah: "UTAH HAS A CHANCE OF SAYING KERRY WILL BE OUR NOMINEE, AND HE WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES."
The rhetoric may be catching on in Utah. A recent Dan Jones poll for KSL and the Deseret Morning news, says 49 per cent of those most likely to vote on Tuesday, favor Kerry, by a wide margin. The next-best favorite was John Edwards, at 23 per cent. http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?nid=39&sid=76725 Wow! Apparently there are still Democratic primaries going on. Who would have guessed?

He's a democrat, but he bows down to the mormon church too much.

and Rocky Anderson's a great guy, very liberal and not just by Utah standards.
One thing to consider: On social issues Mormons are very conservative and like to run a theocracy esp. with silly alcohol laws and such - but - the fundamentalist Religious Right *hates* Mormons and considers them a cult. The Mormons being a Republican constituency right now is strictly a marriage of convenience. As the LDS church expands outside of its traditional Utah-Idaho corridor into what was previously evangelical territory, and as more evangelicals move into Utah, watch for the split to blow wide open. Would Democrats be open to welcoming Mormons (who I find far less objectionable than I do the evangelical-fundies) as a Democratic constituency, even if they bring their social conservatism with them, much as Catholics have historically been a Democratic constituency?
