Non-Dumb DUers - Don't you wish some goofs here would get in a train wreck |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 11:07 AM by WilliamPitt
Seriously. Smash. "I'm sorry, I don't have time to squabble over Dean and Kerry and whatever else, because I've been in a train wreck."
Music to my ears.
:)

My participation is likely to continue declining, as well.
The bitterness and sheer hatred of Kerry and Edwards displayed by some posters is appalling, and the number of truly asinine arguments is increasing exponentially.
Example - one Edwards supporter used a poll that showed that Kerry was behind Bush in one area - jobs, if I remember correctly. Said Edwards supporter failed to mention that Edwards was 13% behind Kerry in the exact same poll. Oops.

Will, I've noticed you tend to let your emotions get the best of you sometimes. I'm sure even you'd admit that you wear your heart on your sleeve... May I suggest that you'd do your cause more good if you didn't direct your anger so often at people you might stand a fair chance of converting to your cause???
Some food for thought.

who are so hyper-sensitive that anything mentioned involving pain, or harm, or hurt in a joking or sarcastic manner causes them to come out and tell us that things like train wrecks are "bad." Simile, metaphor, and figurative language can often involve unpleasantries to get across points--hence train wreck, and we know those involved in the train wreck aren't dead because they can think and reflect on their situation as opposed to fighting about candidates. I felt the same way yesterday when people were so upset about the *'s dead dog and upset over people making very funny cracks about * regarding the dead dog. Humor is our saving grace--even dark humor--.

Again, just wondering where we must draw the line with humor. So, nothing that hints at "wishing ill to fellow human beings"--well have you said mean things about Bush or the administration on this board that could be construed as wishing ill upon Bush--he is our fellow human being. Do you dislike animals, then, if it is only "human beings" we can't wish ill upon?
I'm just trying to figure out where people draw the line with their humor, because obviously, we all draw out lines at different places. Frankly, people with strict humor lines are not much fun to be around (imo).

|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 11:43 AM by YNGW
... while trying to make a joke about a train wreck which is just a subset of an even larger train wreck.
What a train wreck!
There's a story about a guy who got hired at a railway station and whose job it was to switch the lines. After going over how it worked, his supervisor asked him, "Now if you got a train going West on Line 'A' and another train going East on Line 'A', and they're heading right at each other going 80 mph, what do you do?" The new hire said "I'm gonna yell "R.C." The supervisor goes "I don't think you understand. Let me say it again. Now if you got a train going West on Line 'A' and another train going East on Line 'A', and they're heading right at each other going 80 mph, what do you do?" The new hire says again "I'm, gonna yell R.C." The supervisor goes "No, that's not what you would do. But let me ask you, why would you yell 'R.C.?'" The new hire says "Oh, I'd yell R.C. I'd yell R.C. just as loud as I could yell it. You see, my friend R.C. ain't never seen a train wreck that bad."

61. It is sarcasm, but still a little too close to home. |
|
I wouldn't want to joke about DUers getting into a train wreck.
Freepers on the other hand ;).

62. What a weak attempt at humor. This sounds like one of my |
|
four-year old's jokes. What's next, are you gonna run around the room screaming "poopy"?
Laughter sometimes is the best medicine. It just helps if the jokes are actually funny.

66. I think there's a difference between a joke and a sarcastic statement-- |
|
sarcasm usually isn't ha, ha funny. It causes us to think.... maybe about the way we are supporting/squabbling about the candidates.
See beyond the train....

73. Also a difference between a joke and the passive-aggressive |
|
taunt it masquerades as.
Let Will and his fan club call me humorless. That's far less an insult than the insult to my intelligence inherent in thinking I wouldn't be able to see through the pseudo-humor to the thinly veiled and nasty but entirely characteristic aggression underneath it. Yeah, I'll take "humorless."

97. The issue really isn't Humor but William Pitt-- |
|
I am not part of his fan club, although I read Truthout occasionally, but I haven't read his book. Whenever William Pitt posts there are always people who seem to love him and others who just seem pissed at him. I haven't been around DU long enough to know the history behind this. I always find the love and hate that he incites very interesting.

I thought that Dookus was already quite clever and succesful by reversing the original train wreck thread. This one was actually even more amusing (no offense to Dookus). What made the threads so succesful were posters falling right into a hole. And I think that the posters didn't even intend to be succesful to fool one single poster as it were clear attempts of humour. They must sit in their chairs, unstoppable to laugh as so many people here see it the right moment to claim the moral highground. All following "train wreck" threads were in response to a certain thread, this thread was just humour and not in the slightest any sort of ill-wishing. This tremendous amount of people now screaming "Oh what a horrible person you are Mr.Pitt! Joking about train wrecks!"... I guess even a great comedian can't build something up like this.

I certainly deserve one or two of my own.... and the right to tell people I hope to see them dead and bloody by the side of the road. Well maybe I am not published enough to say dead. I guess I will have to settle for just bloody.

107. The fact that Will had to edit this post |
|
with a "this is a joke " comment pretty much speaks for itself.
100+ responses on "what did he mean?" "how dare he!" "that isn't funny", etc. etc. etc.
Oh, and lest us not forget the subliminal messages contained within the original post:
Kerry sucks, or Dean sucks, or Edwards sucks, or Kerry is good, but Dean sucks, or Edwards is good, but Kerry sucks, or Dean is good, and everybody else sucks.
"Say, why do you keep hitting yourself with that hammer?" "Because it feels so good when I stop."
Over reacting, anyone?
I swear, some people in here would argue with a lamp post.
