There is nothing "African-American" about her, anymore than the Afrikaaners were African-American.

i know it brings confusion because many times people think of african american as meaning all black americans. but it's not inaccurate or insulting in my opinion to say teresa is african american because she is from africa first (born and raised) and then later became an american.

In fact, I've often noted the same thing, only partly facetiously, to friends.
But I do wonder how long it will be before the Bush folks start a whispering campaign among the bigot wing of their party, trying to "smear" Kerry with the claim that he is married to an African American.

Mrs. Kerry grew up in Africa (Mozambique)...but is white skinned... the question does point out the silliness of the phrase 'African-American' if it can only be used in reference to people with black/brown skin..doing this seems to resurrect the old 'one drop rule'

8. I think it demonstrates how grossly inaccurate "African-American" is. |
|
Because not all African-Americans are black, and not all blacks are from Africa. Many blacks live in Brazil or the West Indies, and certain parts of Africa have large native white populations.
It's guilty white liberals who seem to know what's best for the rest of us and our langauge that make up these terms. They only make the problem worse.

No one's skin color is actually black or white. At least I haven't seen the case.

No one is exactly black or white, but no one has African-American skin, either. I am suspicious of hyphens.
I think the only way that we're going to get past it is to embrace the labels, laugh at them, and eventually outgrow them. It's going to be a slow process.

Australian Aborigines, for example. And their children actually have straight blonde hair.
British Colonialists used to refer to Indians as "Blacks." Little Black Sambo was a story about an Indian boy making deals with tigers who threatened to eat him. Tigers are native to India, not Africa.

12. Yes we will, for black folk out there who say she's not African American |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 02:02 PM by xultar
They are wrong, Why because she is from Africa. I really can't stand the whole African American thing cuz I've never been to Africa, nor am I from Africa. I'm American. My ancesters were from Africa. If you were to drop me out of a plane in Africa and I stayed there for 50 years and then came back, MAYBE you could call me African American but I'm American first.
African Americans are people who were born in Africa and have African citizenship and moved here and then went through the process and became American Citizens.
Ok Bruvas, and Sistahs, Africans I talk to hate it that we call ourselves African Amercian because we aren't. We are Americans, they tell me that they are African Americans because they are born in Africa. (on Edit - I agree with my African American friends)
If we continue to put a Colour on what it is to be African American we are being as bad as the Bubbas out there who aren't capable of a complex thought. Being African American isn't a colour. African American is a Nationality and includes all people from Africa. African's are all races and colours. They aren't Dark Brown or brown. Think of Thomas Jefferson's kids. They are black but they are lighter skinned with blue, grey, hazel, and green eyes.
So I say to Black folk, Black Americans, Americans with African heritage, don't be so single minded and exclude all Africans of different colours in the whole African Americnan thing. If we do, we are as bad as the racists we accuse of being single minded.

i think african-american of portuegese descent is less confusing. she was born and raised in africa, in mozambique, and then became a naturalized american citizen. and she is of portuegese descent.

21. That Mrs. Kerry was Born and Raised in Colonial Africa is a HUGE aspect |
|
of who she is, much of which does not mean much in America but means a lot in the international context.
From what I understand, she and here family are from a pretty revolutionaly globalist tradition.
It might mean she is more concerned with world affairs than U.S. politics.
It also could mean that she is not so preoccupied with U.S. protectionist tendencies.
But then she is likely much more progressive in ways the average American would not like to know about.
