Thinkprogress shocker: Mitt Romney's great grandfather was an illegal immigrant
Edited on Tue Dec-25-07 01:17 PM by antiimperialist
Thinkprogress is reporting that Mitt Romney's parents crossed the Mexico-US border illegally, because the US Government did not tolerate polygamy, which is normal in the Mormon religion.

It's also noteworthy that Mitt Romney's grat-grandfather Miles Romney once crossed the border without the authorization of the Mexican government.

Daily Kos has a diary on this:

2. OK, I'm confused. How could his father be an illegal immigrant
if his father's parents were U.S. citizens? And thus how coud mittwit be the son of illegal immigrants. Even if his parents crossed the border illegally, they're still U.S. citizens, simply U.S. citizens who crossed the border illegally?

3. correction: his great-grand father was an illegal immigrant
Miles Romney, father of George Romney, is the one that likely crossed the Mexican border illegally
Miles chose to leave the country, bringing his multiple wives and children with him across the southern border. In his 1902 book The Story of the Mormons, author William Alexander Linn states that the “Secretario de Fomento of Mexico” related that “The laws of this country do not permit polygamy,” and that the contracts for the establishment of Mormon colonies in Mexico required the same. If true, Miles Romney then knowingly arrived in direct violation of Mexican immigration law.

4. Children of illegal immigrants
Edited on Tue Dec-25-07 01:25 PM by mac2
to this country seem to be as ignorant of our Constitution and laws as their parents\grandparents (also willing to break them).

Shouldn't they be denied free education, etc.? I had to pay for my university by working full time why not them? No one gave me scholorships, etc.

X-Attorney General Gonzales is another child of illegal immigrants.

Do they grow up to hate us even though they prosper and be safe in American, get free college, etc.? Girls not like them, etc.? Is their hate so great they become anti-democratic (wanting Fascism and a theocracy)? They want the rest of us to become what their parents\grandparents fled in Mexcio? Or are they just plain greedy for wealth and power denied their parents? Like the rests of us all had rich and powerful parents even though we've been here for generations.

I have to ask why our Native Americans aren't given the same opportunities? Not the right religion? Color? Corrupt values?

5. All four of (Mitt's great-)grandparents would live out their days in Mexico
Edited on Tue Dec-25-07 02:33 PM by rocknation
...(Mitt's grandparents)...who were monogamous...lived in Chihuahua until the height of the Mexican Revolution in 1912. (Mitt's grandmother),...with Mitt’s (3-year-old) father George in tow, fled across the U.S. border by train with no apparent delay or search at the border. A short time later (Mitt's grandfather), like many Mexican immigrants before and since, covered hundreds of miles under a hot sun, crossing by land into New Mexico.

...George would...becom(e) Governor of Michigan and run...for the Republican nomination for President in 1968...

Was George Romney born on U.S. soil, and if not, should he or his parents have applied for U.S. citizenship? If his parents never practiced polygamy, I think not, because that means they never violated their U.S. citizenship. On the other hand, if George's parents were the children of polygamists, then the law WOULD apply to them AND George--especially if he wasn't born on U.S. soil. That puts Mitt's father's citizenship into question, but having been born in the U.S., he himself is in the clear.

6. I don't think it is right that US citizens were stripped of their citizenship.

This sounds like religious persecution to me.

Apparently the Romney family were countryless as Mexico had the same laws. Some might be crowing about this but I find it depressing.
