HOUSTON -- Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina touched down in Texas on Tuesday to tap into cash needed to fuel a presidential campaign that could end as soon as next week or continue for many months.

The money part of Edwards' trip to Texas came after a campaign rally at Houston's Stephen F. Austin High School.

Edwards delivered his usual stump speech about a nation sharply divided between haves and have-nots, making no mention of Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry, yet taking time to make an indirect pitch to Howard Dean supporters in the state. Edwards praised the former Vermont governor as "a powerful voice for change, a passionate voice for change."

"He brought so many new people, particularly young people to the Democratic Party, to the democratic process. He is somebody who, I believe, has changed the face of American politics forever," Edwards said, drawing applause from a crowd of several hundred.

Edwards' chances of winning in Texas and elsewhere may be tied to his ability to attract Dean backers.
