Kerry should attack Bush - from the right!
Kerry should use a deficits argument to attack Bush from the right. Many conservatives are unhappy about how big the government spending has grown under Bush, and the out of control deficits. This is a way to try to sway the conservatives to at least stay home in Nov, or even vote for Kerry.

1. Statement From John Kerry on Announcement of Record Budget Deficits
Statement From John Kerry on Announcement of Record Budget Deficits
Kerry Says Bush’s Mistakes Shouldn’t Be Corrected on the Backs of Elderly, Children and Families

October 20, 2003

For Immediate Release

"In just over 1,000 days in office, George Bush has turned a $5 trillion surplus into record setting deficits.
"What did we get for those trillions of dollars? More than nine million Americans are unemployed, three million have lost their jobs and more than 40 million don't have the health care they need.

"With more than 3 million jobs lost, record budget deficits and mounting debts, it is time for this Administration to admit what millions of unemployed Americans already know - that the economic policies of George W. Bush are the worst in our nation's history. It's obvious this Administration doesn't know how to get this economy back on track, get Americans back to work and get our nation's finances under control.

"Unfortunately, some people like Howard Dean, believe the way to fix George Bush's failed economic policy and massive deficits is on the backs of seniors, children and families by cutting Medicare and repealing the tax cuts that middle class families deserve. I believe Howard Dean simply has the wrong prescription for what ails America's economy.

"We can cut the deficit in half in four years, give Americans access to the health care coverage they need, invests in education and homeland security without doing it on the backs of our elderly, children and families."

3. That's true.
Fiscally Conservative issues are not only "Right Wing" issues, but it is an issue for the Left and the Right.

It resonates well with all wings of the political spectrum.

4. That Is An Excellent Line, Sir
It will certainly be employed. The fiscal irresponsibility of the criminals of the '00 Coup has alienated a great proportion on the monied people of the country, for in the long run, it poses a profound threat to the value of money itself....

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

6. Bridge Over Troubled Waters
The Dem nominee should attempt to diffuse the left/right dichotomy that has poisoned political discourse, not only in this country but increasingly around the globe. Instead of approaching deficit reduction as a right "position", he should claim it as a responsible patriotic, national security, position, regardless of ideology.

All of these memes resonate with both sides. Therefore, they can all take ownership of them and use it as a bridge between cultural identities.

This is what Progressivism is all about. The building of empathic bridges, not the widening of chasms. Show how reactionary and divisive King George is without saying it explicitly. Let your moral positions speak for you.
