Joe Lieberman asks Nader to reconsider
By SARAH COFFEY

Associated Press Writer

STAMFORD-- U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman harshly criticized Winsted native Ralph Nader Monday for running for president, joining a chorus of Democrats who fear that Nader supporters will help send George W. Bush back to the White House.

"I argued and Al Gore did in 2000 that a vote for Ralph Nader was effectively a vote for George Bush, and if you care about the environment and fairness and the economy as Ralph says he does, than you ought to vote for the Democratic ticket," said Lieberman, who was Al Gore’s running mate in 2000.

As the Green Party’s nominee in 2000, Nader appeared on the ballot in 43 states and Washington, D.C. In Florida and New Hampshire, Bush won such narrow victories that had Gore-Lieberman received the bulk of Nader’s votes in those states, he would have won the general election.

Nader, who is running this time around as an independent candidate, urged voters and the media not to use him as a scapegoat for Gore’s loss in 2000, arguing that Gore won but was denied the presidency by the Supreme Court and Florida election officials.

1. omgoodness it happened again
on another thread I read a candidates word and "heard" the candidates voice (eg in my head I read the words with the cadence/accent of said candidate)... lo and behold... I read this and am now hearing Sen. Lieberman's voice... Guess I have crossed the line to true political junkidom... have heard the candidates voices enough through debates and cspan events... that I know their voices...

Must be a sign to log off and get back to writing...

2. Thanks Joe!
His "Two-Cents" might have just solidified Nader's resolve!

3. Oh sure. That'll do it.
After all, I don't know anyone who Nader respects more than... Joe Lieberman.

<deep deep deep sarcasm>

5. Y'know, this might hold more water if it were coming from...
... Dennis Kucinich, or Jan Schiakowsky, or Jesse Jackson Jr., or Barbara Lee, or -- well, you get the idea.

But the ironic part of this stand by Joe Lieberman is that it is exactly because of many of the actions of politicians like him in cozying up to corporate interests at the expense of the public interest, that will enable some people to say, "You know, Ralph Nader has a point."

Maybe if the progressives in the party were treated as valued members rather than relegated to the status of permanent backbenchers like they're some kind of red-headed stepchildren, then a Nader candidacy would have ZERO credibility.
