I can win even if I lose, sez Edwards
WASHINGTON - Sen. John Edwards says he doesn't need to win a single Super Tuesday primary to stay in the Democratic hunt, and won't drop out if he loses every March 2 contest to John Kerry.
"It's obvious that there's some national momentum going on with Sen. Kerry," Edwards told the Daily News yesterday. "But if you look at what's happening in the individual states where we've campaigned ... in any place that we campaign head-to-head, I'm surging at the end. Every single place, and this is not an accident."

In a wide-ranging discussion with The News Editorial Board via telephone from California, the North Carolina Democrat said the threshold for remaining politically viable has been lowered because of his strong showing in Wisconsin last week, where he erased most of Kerry's 35-point lead to finish a close second.

"What I have to do is win a substantial number of delegates" in the 10 states that vote next Tuesday, Edwards said.

Asked whether he needs to win at least somewhere, Edwards replied, "I don't believe I have to. ... I believe I have a great chance of winning some places on Tuesday, but I'm not drawing that line."

3. It's almost mathematically impossible for Edwards to win at this point
The "it's not over till it's over" and "we aren't giving up" stuff we're hearing from you Edwards people is wishful thinking and highly reminiscent of the Dean campaign. Believe me, it's over. The only question for Edwards now is what position, if any, he will have in the Kerry administration should we be victorious this fall.

70+% of the voters have not voted, and many Kerry folks rest their rosy assumptions without considering two factors: 'buyer's remorse' and Bush's ramped-up attacks on Sen. Kerry, the latter possibly involving questions of financial or 'moral' impro

6. The longer that this race lasts, the better it is for Democrats
Both Kerry and Edwards are getting a lot of press attention and most of it is anti-Bush.

If Edwards surges, the Bush team may have to pull back on their anti-Kerry campaign.
