snip.....

When Clark announced his candidacy in September, Howard Dean had all the money, support and fire of a front-runner. Dean captivated many anti-war Democrats with his heated rhetoric, but there proved to be room for a more pragmatic voice. When Clark emerged, he delivered what one senior campaign official described as a "national security vision" that "went far beyond merely saying that Bush was bad and that Iraq was a mistake."

Clark not only outlined what he perceived as Bush's mistakes but also an exit strategy to get U.S. troops out of Iraq. When he spoke about issues like patriotism and national security, Clark believed he brought what he later described as "gravitas" to the Democratic Party.

snip ....

By caucus time, Dean began to unravel at such a pace that Iowa would reject the front-runner. But General Clark, who many would argue set the ball rolling, was not there to pick up the pieces.

"Iowa became a referendum on Dean, and Kerry, to his credit, was the candidate standing by to be the beneficiary," a Clark campaign official reflected. "Suddenly, in Kerry, you had a Democrat with national security credentials, who appeared electable, had won a primary and was from the establishment."

2. It's good to see this
I've missed Wes Clark on a daily basis. Glad to read this, glad to see him out campaigning (Kerry). His message is still an important one. I was one of those who heard his message first-hand and was moved by it. I look forward to whatever the future may hold for him in the next Dem administration.

Go Wes!

5. This is a great read
Thanks for the post, Jim.

The reporter seems to admire Clark. Her analysis of Clark's impact on Dean is on-target as well.

I'm surprised we haven't we haven;t seen more articles like this. Then again, given the state of our mostly unthinking media, I'm not surprised.

7. Thanks Jim4Wes
I like hearing this:
Wesley Clark doesn't intend to disappear from the public eye!

I agree with most and Wes himself has said, it would of been different if he started in Iowa.
I just hope and pray he is a big part of the Kerry Administration.

Thanks again friend for a great post! :hi:

8. I miss Wes
Even today, whenever I talk to anyone about politics, it's still all about Clark. My friend says (half) jokingly that I may need to see a therapist. My girlfriend ignores me . . .

but I FINALLY convinced my Kucinich-supporting mother that Clark deserves(d) her support.
