The outrage regarding racism toward Obama would be a little more credible if.... |
|
his supporters didn't marginalize and ridicule another minority that spoke out against his use of an ex-gay pastor to appeal to bigoted voters in SC.

29. No shit. I started reading DU after being away for about 2 years about a week ago. |
|
I couldn't believe there was still so much discussion of an incident from 3 months ago that hardly anyone knew about.
I'm kinda ambivalent about it. I think it was a colossal mistake on the part of Obama's campaign not to check the guy out. Apparently, he performed for BUSH at the RNC convention in 04! :puke: That alone should have been enough to ixnay him.
OTOH, yanking him from the show once he was billed would not only have offended the people who wanted to see McClurkin, it would be seen as a slap in the face to the African-American community to appease the gay community (which is largely perceived, I hate to say it, as affluent and overwhelmingly white). Basically, Obama was fucked either way, and made what was probably the politically safer choice.
In the end, the lesson learned was to thoroughly vet people like that.

30. So Obama decided to slap gay people in the face to appease African Amrericans? What b.s. |
|
What about African American gay people - many of whom post on DU?
Your post proves the point of the OP. You don't give a damn about gay people (yeah, we're all affluent and "overwhelmingly white" - whatever the hell that means).

|
If it means anything to you, I refuse to marry my boyfriend because gay people can't marry. Not that it matters, since you seem to be hellbent on rejecting anyone who doesn't fully embrace your idealistic fervor.
BTW, I didn't say that I thought gays were white and affluent, dumbass.

A mistake caused by staff error due to poor research, not by intentional ill-will towards gays, but an error nonetheless.
Still--"shucking and jiving?" Who the hell USES that phrase anymore?

5. "Marginalize and ridicule?" BS on that. |
|
McClurkin is a horrendous man, and no Obama supporter would say otherwise. Use of McClurkin was shallow, petty, and a cause of grave concern, and very few Obama supporters would say otherwise. The problem, however, is when you post things like "Obama is homophobic," which is simply untrue. If your concern regarding Obama is genuine, I would think you could make your case without distortions.

McClurkin is not a horrendous man. His view of homosexuality being something god can cure is misguided but the message he spreads in his music are far from horrendous in fact they are inspirational and lift many people up.
don't forget he said this in his appearance.
"We don't believe in discrimination we don't believe in hatred and if you do you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. God loves Everybody."
That is his prevailing message.
He was raped as a child and it colors his judgment when it comes to homosexuality but it is not the message that he delivers through his music.
The guy is wrong but I don't find him horrendous, just sadly conflicted on this particular issue.

You don't have a right to blame a whole group for the actions of one person...That's the textbook definition of prejudice...
McClurkin also (lobbied) to have a New York City high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teen agers closed...
One person's pain is no greater or lesser than another person's pain...
If a white woman is raped by a person of color does she have a right to hate all people of color?
If a person of color is raped by a white person does she have a right to hate all white people?
Either we call bullshit on all forms of bigotry or we don't...

but it doesnt mean people these kinds of things happen to arent affected by them and that it doesn cause views in them that they otherwise wouldnt consider.
If I remember correctly his objection to the GLBT schoo was that it opened them up to predators. Something i read I think while researching him after this whole garbage blew up here.
I am glad that your friend didnt grow up to be a homophobe. It doesnt take away from the fact that such an event can cause all kinds of mental harship on a person. Some deal with it better than others.
McClurkin could probably use some serious counciling as he obviously still harbors a lot of feelings relating to his incident.
And once again his music is inspiring have you listened to it? Theres a very good message in his music personal behind the scenes views aside.
I like Ted Nugents stuff, despite the fact that I find him personaly reprehensible. It is possible you know.

And you are showing remarkable skill at employing a broad brush. A few asshats does not constitute a majority of Obama supporters. I'm glad I'm far more generous about Clinton supporters despite a few doozies in your midst, than you are about Obama supporters.

19. PURE OBSCURANTISM! Let's see how Hillary reacts to this |
|
Obama sharply distinguished his own views from those of McClurkin on gay rights, but HRC HERSELF made the comment, described in a recent NY TIMES editorial as "peculiar" about MLK and LBJ.
Obviously, as this thread shows, there are indeed folk milking the McClurkin stuff to play politically correct 'gotcha'. Note that in the case of HRC campaign, you see MAJOR figures, including the candidate herself, stirring the pot of race, THE VERY CONTROVERSY OVER WHICH has a tendency to exploit the problem, as a strategy against Obama.
Is there any similar systematic evidence (not to be confused with DU and other troll protestations) of a systematic strategy or PATTERN on this issue by Obama (eg, instances OTHER than the McClurkin event?)
